I just found out TSCC built and owns the City Creek mall in SLC! I'm sure most of y'all know this already. Man, it just gets better and better! I laughed out loud when I found this out.

My question is: HOW? Does the LDS church claim 503c status? Are its expenses public info? Are there any other "nonprofits" that own shopping centers? Why don't members care? Was it paid for with tithing money? Is there a resource I can go to to learn about how the church runs as a business, assets it owns, etc? I'm fascinated by this info, if you can't tell!

I always thought the shopping at City Creek seemed "celestial"...;)

Yes, I know that my retailer lives.

We should be thankful, then, that tithing was only 10%, not the usual 40-50% markup in the retail industry?

lol

The so-called church has subsidiaries that are for-profit (Property Reserve, Inc, Suburban Property Reserve, Inc, Ag Reserves, Hawaii Reserves, etc). The stated reason is to make money to support the church, but the reality is that excess funds (from tithing and bequeaths) are put there and profits seem to be rolled-over. They can claim that no tithing dollars went into it, but ulimately that is the source of all their funds. And of course money is fungable, that is money can easily be moved from the for-profit entities to the non-profit so-called church IF THEY WANTED TO, but the leadership CHOOSES TO starve the so-called church (fire the janitors, provide minimal support to ward programs, don't pay the low-level leadership) in the quest for profits, empire building and enriching those friends of the church involved in construction and related businesses.

What is interesting is that many of the stores in City Creek sell such high priced stuff that the rank and file members can't afford to shop there. It's all for show and to get rid of the riff raff. There are security guards all over the place to escort people out who cause a stir or don't dress right according to their judgment.

management fees to Taubman and low rents to draw stores there even though, as you say, the rank-and-file visitor is not spending much there even if there might be decent foot traffic, I would like to see how much money they are bleeding per month.

Maybe someone from Taubman will leak some cash flow records to MormonLeaks.

Just to maintain appearances of success and, as you say, keep the riff-raff more distant from Temple Square. Is this what Jesus railed against when he threw the money-changers from the steps of the temple?

I think that mall is a gift to the wealthy Mormons who live on the "shelf" above SLC. Rich Mormon men and women can shop upscale now. Another reason for the mall, and one they admitted to, is that it would "save" the neighborhood adjacent to Temple Square. The religion has its own special version of fascism. Religion combined with government and retail.

Yes. The church was quite open about its desire to eliminate the blight near Temple Square.

So they built an additional temple, this one to mammon.

THE ( MORmON) church does NOT own any malls!!! I asked my TBM mom about that , and she said all of news paper articles are wrong. thats just more anti MORmON attempts to discredit THE church. my mom knows that elder McConkie and elder packer agree with her !!!

I am posting this news paper article just to point out that it is WRONG. Toward the very end of the article, it states

QUOTE Owner • City Creek Reserve, the real-estate arm of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints UNQUOTE

that would indicate that City Creek is owned by LD$ Inc. and that just can NOT be correct, I know because my TBM mom told me so. She knows: that Newspapers print incorrect stuff all the time, and that THE church is a church, not a real estate landlord

This is OBVIOUSLY another scheme of the foul dastardly anti MORmONS who have no limit as to how low they will stoop to discredit THE (MORmON) church. You know the same people who made up the stories about Joseph SMith sticking his head in a hat with a seer stone to translate the Book OF MORmON.

Time to post my gem here again, lest we forget the blessings of the mall.
Sing to "when upon lifes billows"

09/30/2014 by Cokeisoknowdrinker
When upon life's billows and you need to shop
When you are discouraged at the parking lots
Come to CITY CREEEEK,..... each and everyone
And it will surprise you what God's corp-or-ation's done

C....ount your mone...y, hundreds...fives and ones
C....ount your credit cards and see what sales are on
Ignore the home.......less outside the temple walls
Count how endless tithing had.... no effect at all.

Are you ever burdened with the lines at Gap
Do your bags seem heavy as you shop at Mr. Mac
C......ount your money... and GAZE up in the sky
Ask yourself why Condo prices... are so high.

When you shop at City Creek with diamonds and the gold
Think that Christ has promised you His wealth un....told
C-o-u-n-t your many blessings, with Credit on your side
No reward in heaven,... just this palace in the sky

So amid the conflict at the check out stands
Do not be discouraged at five billion spent
C...ount your many blessings at the tithing you sent in
Question not the leaders that would be co-mitt-ing sin

C.....ount your money, hundreds, fives and ones
C....ount your money and scorn-those that cannot come
C....ount the tithing... sent in by me and you
Count the money and ignore Mormon 8 verse32

Are you ever burdened with a load of debt?
Does the cross seem heavy when you're tithed to death
Count your many blessings as your house is reposessed
And keep ever faithful in the state of most depressed.

So, amid the conflict whether great or small,
Do not be disheartened, God is owner of the mall;
Count... your many blessings, angels will attend,
Help and comfort give you till your shopping ends

At the bottom of the donation slip is the following disclaimer.

"Though reasonable efforts will be made to use donations as designated, all donations become the Church's property and will be used at the Church's sole discretion to further the Church's overall mission."

This gives them license to do do whatever the hell they want and their contracted accountants can stand up in GC and claim that all funds have been used appropriately.

The real mind-bender is that the church often persuades senior "missionaries" to work for free at the for-profit entities (not the mall, obviously, but at other sites.)
