If you can't report the facts, get out of the newspaper business.

“It is also my belief that to publish anything contrary to God’s Word on this issue would be to publish something in the newspaper that is not true,” he said. Calling the paper’s edits “both ethical and lawful,” he added, “It would be unethical to publish a news item that is known by the editor to be false.”

“Based on the truth found in the Word of God,” Hamilton concluded, “I could not in good conscience identify Mr. Gambill as the husband of Mr. Giles.”

...and some folks wonder why asshats like this get criticized (and sued).

This is why.

How come tyrants like him get to be the voice of religion in America?

“I could not in good conscience identify Mr. Gambill as the husband of Mr. Giles.”

Because he wasn't. Also free speech. Obituaries aren't obligated to publish every fact about someone (or even anything at all.)

The line is drawn wherever the owner/publisher/editor of the publication wants to draw it.

It’s called the 1st Amendment.

And yeah, it applies to people you don’t agree with.

Don’t like it? Move to Mexico.

People PAY for obituaries. They are not news, written by a newspaper's staff. Families write obituaries themselves and pay to have them run. If this man could not run it as submitted, he should have let the family know and they would have refused the alteration. This is not a first amendment issue.

I notice you ignored the 1st Amendment rights of the person paying to publish the obituary...and that it applies to people you don't agree with, like two men being married.

Don't like it? Tough. They were legally married, that man was his husband. Period. Bigotry and religious ignorance doesn't change that fact.

On the newspaper's Facebook page, a couple of people claimed the couple submitted the story as "news" rather than an obituary and didn't pay. It still seems really wrong to me, though. The guy whose name was omitted posted a few comments. He seems like a pretty interesting guy.

Even worse, then. Changing "news" facts based on religious belief...

instead of reporting facts that will force you to think and might possibly change your mind?

http://www.slate.com/articles/health_and_science/science/2017/11/why_conservatives_are_more_susceptible_to_believing_in_lies.html

"Although Freud is out of favor with many contemporary psychologists, modern cognitive psychology suggests that he was on the right track. The tenacity of many of the right’s beliefs in the face of evidence, rational arguments, and common sense suggest that these beliefs are not merely alternate interpretations of facts but are instead illusions rooted in unconscious wishes."

How convenient for you: don't bother to make reasonable arguments to support your position, just call everyone who doesn't agree with you mentally ill, and be done.

Completely irrational and dishonest...but convenient.

Read the article, loudmouth.

Oh, and I noticed you had no such scruples when “anybody” linked to an article above.

Get a life.

I did. Did you?

"The journal said the error doesn’t change the main conclusions of the paper, which found that “personality traits do not cause people to develop political attitudes.”"

His link didn't claim that conservatives have a mental illness.

> Get a life.

Get some honesty.
