A couple of years ago, I started developing an intolerance to garlic, onions, and peppers, but mostly garlic. Every time I eat it, I feel really sick. I’ve tried to avoid it, but every once in a while, I have zero willpower and immediately regret it an hour later.

On Thursday, I was stupid and ate some pasta dish with onions and lots of garlic and I felt so sick, I had to leave work early. It’s saturday night and I still feel like I’m on the verge of puking. Couldn’t eat anything all day, it’s just this constant, nasty feeling. It’s so embarrassing how a bowl of noodles put me out of commission for two days.

Do you think i should talk to someone ? I’m not sure what they’d do for food intolerances, but it’s getting worse and worse and I’m a little concerned.0

In general (since ancient history, when garlic was frequently used as medicine) garlic is universally recommended as one of the healthiest foods we can eat...

...but it is definitely possible to develop a food intolerance to it.

Google: "suddenly I can't eat garlic without feeling sick" and skim through the returns, because evidently (from my skimming; I just did this), the exact reason why YOU have apparently developed an intolerance for garlic may not be the same reason that would apply to your sibling, or your friend, or your neighbor.

Hope this helps.

Find a very good allergy doc and get skin tests. The only thing I'm not allergic to is hamster epithelium.

Seriously--food allergies can be deadly.

Definitely see a doctor and get a referral to an allergy specialist. I was relieved to find out I had a food allergy, because I thought I was chronically ill.

Talk to family members. Often food allergies run in families, and they might have the same problem you do.

I have celiac disease, which is an allergy to wheat, barley, and rye, and it runs in my family, on my mother's side. Three of my uncles have it, three cousins, and two of my cousin's children have it. At family reunions, someone always brings gluten-free treats.

No matter how good those cookies and cakes look, I have no desire to eat anything that makes me that sick! I don't miss it at all! You won't miss whatever you are allergic to, after you stop eating it for a couple of weeks--I promise you won't!

I suggest you don't eat garlic, onions, peppers, or noodles until you get the diagnosis from the doctor. You might be allergic to whatever it is you eat with the garlic, such as the wheat noodles, or peppers. You might have had the intestinal flu bug that has been going around. Who made the pasta dish? Maybe you had mild food poisoning.

On your own, you can try the elimination diet:
--Don't eat garlic, onions, peppers, or noodles for a week.
--Then add each item back into your diet, individually, one by one, for four days each time, and see how your body reacts to each one.
--You don't have to eat a huge portion, because that would make you too sick. Just a normal serving will let you know.

A lot of people can't tolerate peppers and onions, especially as they get older.
