a quote/ perhaps just a phrase I'm sure I saw on RfM:

(paraphrase)

Sometimes I make my kids dress up in swim fins & scuba gear, just to impress upon them that I'm in charge & must be obeyed.

(cute, huh?)

thanks, I'll check in the a.m.

Errr, shouldn't the NSPCC (or the country's equivalent) know about this?

It's a form of child abuse.

ALL parenting is a form of child abuse.

A kid in swim fins and scuba gear may be cute.

Making a kid wear swim fins and scuba gear to let them know you are in charge and must be obeyed isn't cute. Its controlling and probably not so good for the kid.

My older brother had a thing for forcing his kids to do things because he was the parent and must be obeyed.....jump into cold water, touch the dead fish, eat whatever icky thing was given to them, hold the snake, etc. I saw his kids in tears at times. A couple of them grew up to do the same....seemingly enjoy the control of forcing a kid to do something they don't want to do.

I don't get it.

Yea, I remember something similar.

My father whispering words into my ear that I was supposed to repeat for the amusement of 150 people. All the while I was so terrified that it is a miracle I didn't wet myself.

How about dozens of songs, sung hundreds of times about how I had awesome parents and god wanted me to have those parents. I'll bet I was pretty cute then as well.

My mother didn't usually force me to eat foods I couldn't stand but occasionally I had to sit at the table for hours after a meal until I cleaned my plate. It never worked. Once she forced me into eating a food I literally detested. I ate it and then vomited. That ended the food fights.
