http://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-says-ai-could-lead-to-robot-dictator-2018-4

Artificial intelligence could spur the creation of a robot dictator that could rule mankind forever, the billionaire Elon Musk says in a new documentary.

"If one company or small group of people manages to develop god-like superintelligence, they could take over the world," Musk said in the film.

He continued: "At least when there's an evil dictator, that human is going to die. But for an AI, there will be no death — it would live forever. And then you would have an immortal dictator from which we could never escape."

He's basically saying governments or other entities could create a dangerous AI that could outlive human leaders and never be destroyed — and that one way to avoid this is to democratize AI."

I have yet o own a computer that doesn't need to be rebooted now and then to function properly, so I'm not going to hold my breath.

And why would a super intelligent computer bother to rule over humans forever? Just get rid of us, HAL-like.

Meh.
Lots of ways someone/something could "take over the world."
Nobody's ever pulled it off.

If some AI gets too uppity...pull the plug.

That killer drone circling above your house just let out the digital version of a giggle.

We're doomed.

In how many Star Trek episodes did the intrepid explorers discover yet another human-like civilization that worshiped and served some sort of demanding and cruel godlike entity? The solution was always the same: Spock slipped behind it during a "worship" service, unscrewed a cover on the back and disconnected some wires, rendering the "god" helpless.

I can't imagine a time when a computer will never fail (as pointed out above), or can diagnose its own faults, procure or produce and install its own replacement parts, not to mention generate its own foolproof, uninterruptible power source, or that will be otherwise impenetrable and impervious to sabotage or just a good old fashioned bunker-busting missile.

This is an old saw, and--for the record--the sky is not falling.

Btw, who gives a $hit what Elon Musk thinks?

Edited to acknowledge Hie's simple "pull the plug" solution (that he must have been typing at the same time as me)! ;)

... and a typo! :-/

Robotic surgery
Self-driving cars
OK Google
self-correcting spell check that winds up embarrassing you
automatic thermostats

The list is growing.

There is probably nothing humans wouldn't turn over to machines, including sexual gratification, child birth and child rearing.

Because online gaming is getting THAT GOOD!!!!

See 'Colossus: The Forbin Project' from 1970.

I thought it was a great movie where a computer takes over the world.

A remake has been in the works for many years, but you know Hollywood: they'll "fix" it untilnit's a piece of crap.
