Most females at BYU appeared to be either nursing students, or would take teaching classes.

Instead, I took 'public speaking' (where I first heard about Demosthenes), and art classes (which were held off campuses, down a hill, and in an old school house). (It was a long way to walk from my dorm, and plenty cold and snowy for a California gal, and in skirts--no pants or jeans allowed.)

At any rate, one of these art classes was for drawing the body beautiful.

Before the class started, the instructor took quite a bit of time warning us that the modal (a female), was being paid for her services, and that she was very nervous to present herself to the class. With this warning, we wondered--at least I did-- if, indeed, she would be without cloths on.

I needn't have worried, for she came out in a black full-body leotard.

What was your biggest surprise in a BYU class?

We had nude models in my figure drawing classes in a community college in California.

Well.;. we nursing students saw all manner of breasts, loins and sinews - both alive.... and dead!

Most people haven't a clue what happens to them once they are anesthetized!

I had a cyst removed from my buttocks when I was in college. It was a simple in-office procedure and the doctor's office staff included nursing students from the local college. While I was lying on the table, bare bum up, the doctor called in the his nursing students so that they could observe the procedure. I was awake to wave at them as they all filed into the small exam room.

Hey, in three years, I never went to a Tuesday Devotional... Did I miss anything? Never attended a single Sunday meeting my first year back from the mission, either. I was a mid-semester admittee, so I was obviously not on anyone's radar!

What the hell were the Thursday, at noon, meetings all about? Never went to a single one of those, either.

As for the biggest surprise, it was the first day of an acting class. I don't have the words.....

Four years of studio art classes at my public university. Lots of nude models, both female and male.

I had took a Sociology class from Reed Blake at BYU. One day he was telling a story of how he took his son to a BYU/Wyoming football game in Laramie, WY. He was telling about how the referee made a bad call, and the fans started chanting "Bullshit...Bullshit!!", and then the fans flipped the refs off. Blake then proceeded to give the class "the finger". I was quietly laughing my ass off while the rest of the class sat there paralyzed.

I liked his class so much I took another one from him the next semester. When he told the "Bullshit...Bullshit!!" story again he winked at me. I then raised my hand and asked, "Prof. Blake, are you sure the fans were screaming "Bullshit...Bullshit!" and not something else?" He said, "No, I am absolutely positive they were chanting "Bullshit...Bullshit!!" We went back and forth a few more times dropping more "Bullshits" on the virgin ears of my classmates. This time there were actually a few that put their hands over their ears. Haa haaa haaaa!!. When class was over, Bro. Blake gave me a smile and a pat on the back.

I also took a Geology class from Harold Bissell. One day while out on a field trip I was speaking with him when some gal came running up with a rock that she thought was exotic. He held it, sniffed it, licked it, and then said, "Wow...this is quite a find." The gal excitedly asked, "What is it? What is it?" Bissell said, "I believe what you have found here is a calcified piece of cow shit." I burst out laughing and thought I was going to pee my pants. The gal screamed "Ewwwwwww", dropped the rock and took off running. Bro. Bissell started chuckling and I said, "That's not really a piece of cow shit is it?" He said, "Nawww...but sometimes you have to have a little fun." We both had a good laugh.

Years later Bissell's son, Preston, was actually posting here on RFM. He said that BYU had kind of screwed his father over and he ended up retiring, and I believe he left the church, and passed away a few years later. Sadly, Preston passed away (brain tumor) as well, but he would post here occasionally up until he died.

I was a geology major at YBU. While I was working on my MS, I was lucky enough to sit in on Harold's coal geology class. During one class, someone asked a question that was so far afield that it was nearly impossible to answer. So, with Harold's typical class and sympathy, he said, "I'm sorry, you're so lost you wouldn't be able to find your ass with both hands." He was a great guy and loved by all his students.

I ended up, years later, becoming a coal geologist.

I was an art major when I started as a freshman in 1975. We had the same talk and same fully clothed "nudes". That's one of the reasons why I changed my major to geology by the end of the semester.

I still fail to understand this place's rejection of using fully clothed models for art classes?

Seems ridiculous for a supposed institution of higher learning.

Do they use crash test dummies for those studying human anatomy?

Sorry but instead of worrying about nude models you should be worrying about the money you are wasting in art and public speaking classes

Are you claiming to know the purpose of life, with such assurance that you can declare what is 'good' to do and what is a 'waste of time'?

See, I'm relatively certain that responding to you is a waste of time, but you've demonstrated that 'wasting time' (i.e., you posting to which I am responding) is an acceptable use of the precious and very finite minutes of our lives.

If you do know the purpose of life, how about letting the rest of us know, so that we can stop doing those things that aren't useful?

I, too was an art major. The figure models in our classes all wore skin toned body suits. We were told to ‘draw what we saw’- in other words just minor shading/shadowing around the nipple areas and no pubic hairs or *good heavens* shaft-like protuberances...

yes true, but how many artist are making a living being an artist. My first degree was worthless because I was told to just get a degree it doesn't matter what it is, that may have been true in 1960 but not today.

It turned out that my art major helped me work with clients, architects and interior designers as a construction manager building very high end custom homes in Beverly Hills, Malibu and Montecito.

How about that?

Full body skin colored leotard at my figure drawing class at Ricks in 1966. Nothing new...or progressive here....not a surprise.

While not Mormons (as far as I know they were evangelicals), two people in my costume design class drew the most muscular and "sexy" figures, which I found amusing because both the male and female nudes we had to draw were not exactly buff or sexy. No time for getting aroused anyway by the naked human body, because we had about 30 seconds to capture a pose before the instructor had them change position. That's tough!

This was at fabulous Fresno State.

Yeah, I did not go to BYU either.

I took an intro to drawing class at Washington State a couple of years ago. We had a few weeks dedicated to figure drawing nude models. There was NOTHING erotic or pornographic about drawing nudes due to,
-only having a minute at most to draw the model before pose change (as Chicken N. Backpacks mentioned)
-trying to imply motion when the instructor had the model move
-trying to draw the model's (obscenity deleted) hands right (for those who have never taken a drawing class, hands are a PAIN to draw well)
-the fact that the purpose of drawing nude models was to get students acquainted with proportions, shading, and drawing from what you see as applied with humans.
BYU, you are missing the point of human models in art classes. I have no idea how you can shade the curve of the back when the model is wearing a leotard.
