I submitted my resignation via e-mail (per instructions here on RfM) back in mid-May. About a week later I received a letter in the mail saying it was a local matter and that my letter would be forwarded to the SP and the Bish (even though I stated to keep the matter confidential and did not want to be contacted by ANYONE). Thanks a lot. So now who knows where that letter is floating around!!!

That letter got me all fired up and then I went to the website where you can resign via a lawyer (Q U I T Mormon). I submitted resignation again, just to be sure and cover all bases. This squeaky wheel will get greased!

As of today, I received an e-mailed copy (that tssc sent to the lawyer) that I am officially resigned. Hooray!!!

All in all, it took 3 weeks. But really only 2 weeks via the lawyer, as I don't know what became of the e-mail resignation. During the last 3 weeks I've been waiting for the other shoe to drop...as in wrathful nastiness from my parents. They haven't made a single peep. For those who haven't followed my story, my dad is the ward clerk in the ward I'm 'supposed to be in'. So there's no way he's not going to find out. My TBM parents have always made me feel like a criminal over leaving their so-called church.

As I read the e-mail I couldn't help notice that the date, today's date, has some significance for me. It was today, 20 years ago that I started my first full-time job, which ultimately allowed me the financial means to move out of my parents' house and in effect leave Mormonism. Today is poetic for me. Today is a great day to be an exmo.

I am very proud of you bluebutterfly. Took me a long time to finally have the courage to bring the hammer down and resign and say f#ck you to everybody including their god, i had had enough even it would cost me my life i did not care. I had wanted to do it for as long as i could remember and i could not get them to excommunicate me to save my life. That millstone was around my neck for a very very long time thinking it had to be around my neck forever.

That"ecclesiastical matter" thing is what they always do. There should be some sort of notification on RfM that this will be their initial response. It is an attempted, I believe, to flummox you a bit by making you think that your resignation is dependent on interaction with the bishop. But the truth is, you're legally no longer a member as soon as your letter or email is received. In fact, if the bishop we're to try to contact you, you would be able to refuse because you're no longer a member.

True - but I don't trust devious mormon clergy not to turn the whole thing into a charade and completely ignore a resignation request.

Someone on RFM eventually called member services to verify that their resignation was processed - that may be the only way to be sure (assuming MS will cooperate).

I did mine by snail mail when I resigned. It was by snail mail we received confirmation it had been processed. I certified the resignation to be sure it was received.

It's so much simpler now with e-mail resignations. :)

Congratulations, you're out!

They tried pulling that crap on me when I mailed my resignation. Immediately I called SLC and told them no way was I going to meet with local lay leaders. They were why I resigned when I did.

From there we too were resigned but not before my making a stink about their supposed protocol. It was all a charade in the first place.

20 years is a nice anniversary to celebrate for you. :)

Thanks to all for the support!
I wanted to share the news, but also give a real account of what I did and how long it took. It might be helpful to others.

Congratualtions! I want to echo what Cludgie said that you got the standard reply to your initial email. The bishop still has to process it whether you use email or a lawyer.

The bishop showed up at my door....

I wouldn't talk to him....I didn't know him.

My DH wanted to talk to him.....he didn't know him either.
And DH had resigned some years previous.

Anyway, DH told bishop/stranger we were going to another church.
(true at the time but only briefly)

Not too long after that visit I got the letter.....I was out.
But included was the pamphlet.

I've had no contacts since...

YEAH I'm not a mormon.

Congrats You did it. Celebrate & Live a happy life.
