A little bit of Spaulding in his life
A little bit of Ethan Smith by his side
A little bit of Bible is all he needs
A little bit of Late War is what I see…

Thanks. This link destroys the "uniqueness" of the voices in The Book of Mormon. If they are so unique then how come the texts are so similar for the narration? Oh, yeah, Smith borrowed in his penchant for syncretism.

If you make enough passes you can make many women your "wives" and a small fortune for your family.

Sidney Rigdon and oliver cowdery created the BOM. they brought in bombastic Joe as their front man. Joe loved that calling /position. it was a match made in Hell. Joe promptly commandeered the rigdon and cowdery BOM scam and took over.

This seems the most likely scenario to me too. It is particularly well presented at Craig Criddle's website:

https://mormonleaks.com/

Joe was taken on as the salesman and then took over the whole scam.

Remember his Mother tells of him regaling the family with tales of the Indians and inhabitants of the area. Their dress, living and such.

He made it up.

May well have been influenced by reading or hearing about theories from others - but he made it up.

There is an attorney, Kendall Sheets, who claims Joseph Smith read Marco Polo's travel journals. He says he found the words "curelom" and "cumon" (did I get the words right? I don't have a BoM to double-check) in Polo's writings.

Packham and Criddle and others haven’t had positive things to say about the Sheets book and theory. And I don’t think cureloms and cumoms were ever specifically mentioned by Marco Polo.

J. Smith Jr was adept at plagiarizing many, many sources for his new religion: View of the Hebrews by Ethan Smith (no relation), quoted pg 220 over 40 direct parallels, 3 editions published seven years before the Book of Mormon,
The Spalding Manuscript (Captain Moroni, Standard of Liberty, etc.),
Pilgram's Progress (i.e. story of Abinadi & Alma, Lehi, etc.)
The Bible,
Shakespeare, (quotes from Hamlet),
Three Degrees of Glory and other writings that compose the Plan of Salvation from Emanuel Swedenborg.....
Also there is a claim that it largely plagiarizes Marco Polo..
not the first to publish claims that the American Indians were Jews.....
