"Nevertheless, it required time to wind down practices that were so deeply ingrained in family tradition and culture, especially when fermented beverages of all kinds were frequently used for medicinal purposes. The term “strong drink” certainly included distilled spirits such as whiskey, which thereafter the Latter-day Saints generally shunned. They took a more moderate approach to milder alcoholic beverages like beer and “pure wine of the grape of the vine, of your own make.”16 For the next two generations, Latter-day Saint leaders taught the Word of Wisdom as a command from God, but they tolerated a variety of viewpoints on how strictly the commandment should be observed. One?
Beer and pure wine...isn't that two?
Or three, if you separate reds from whites (wines)...:)

Oh, and let's not forget that old Joe continued to use the whiskey after he "revealed" the WoW. Both for washing (in the temple, no less!) and for imbibing...

I don't know what "pure" wine is. I was taught as a Mormon it was what Jesus drank and it was grape juice.

"Pure" wine, is of course, white and delightsome.

You know, like Chardonnay...

You know a lot of stuff hie. I am always impressed. You probably know a lot of the real history in detail.

I wish it was just inebriation. Unfortunately, Mormonism with regards to religion has access to Marx's opioid.

I remember seeing it advertised in Europe, and was curious to try it, but never had the chance. I have no clue what it is like. It sounds very elegant, though.

From Wikipedia—

Absinthe (/ˈæbsɪnθ, -sæ̃θ/; French: [apsɛ̃t]) is historically described as a distilled, highly alcoholic (45–74% ABV / 90–148 U.S. proof) beverage.[1][2][3][4] It is an anise-flavoured spirit derived from botanicals, including the flowers and leaves of Artemisia absinthium ("grand wormwood"), together with green anise, sweet fennel, and other medicinal and culinary herbs.[5]

I might taste it, but the alcohol content is beyond my Utah 3.2 beer limit. Very best, Catnip.

I've always wanted to try it. I love anise.

When you are trying to get off the mental opiates anger is natural. Hopefully you don't turn to real ones. I know people who went the other way. Religious fervor slips into their place so easy that I believe Marx wasn't being just metaphorical. There probably is a physiological thing too!
