Did not want to detract from Hie's story (which was incredibly awful), so started this thread about a bad funeral

I hope ghawd doesn't fire Rev. Briese! If he does get fired, and the Catholic church can prove it was for good cause, Rev. Briese might have to forego collecting unemployment!

(As an important aside, in preparing this post, I determined that saying, "Friar Tuck, Fire Truck, Friar Tuck, Fire Truck, Friar Tuck, Fire Truck, Friar Tuck, Fire Truck, Friar Tuck, Fire Truck" as quickly as you can is difficult, especially if you don't look at the printed words!! See what I go through for you guys?!)

Unless it's recorded. That's horrible.

ANNNNYWAAAY, this type of thing, I'm still speechless.

The wedding Hie recounted? That momma needs a verbal beat down.

People should be content with destroying their owns lives on their own time and not running about making a mess of others'.

I had the sad misfortune of sitting through the worst funeral I have ever attended.

The funeral was for my wife's grandmother (I will call Grandma X) and the Eastern Orthodox minister (I'm not sure what they are called) talked about my wife's grandmother's life. She was born in Russia and her town was occupied by Nazis.

Then the minister said the following (I'm not kidding)..."Grandma X was lucky to have not been RAPED by Nazis...my own mother was not as fortunate."

So there's that. Instead of spending the time reflecting on the life of our beloved grandmother we now get to focus on this minister's mom being raped by Nazis. Fabulous.

Wait! Was the priest saying that his father was an unidentified rapist Nazi soldier?

That must have been an interesting story, when his mom told him that...

Wow. As a born-and-raised Catholic, I've seen a range of priests, but never any priest that bad.

As an aside, I'm wondering how someone could have possibly damaged the chalice (the cup for the drinking of communion wine) which is normally kept on the church's altar. Since it happened before the funeral mass, the only scenario that makes sense to me is that they were placing flowers on and around the altar. But I believe normally there is a flower guild that would attend to that.

I wonder if there is more to the story such as an out of control child or a drunk breaking the chalice. However, there is no excuse for the priest's reaction. He is supposed to be a professional and to be able to handle difficult situations assuming this was one.

I agree with you. He was way out of line, and from the article, he is now fully cognizant of that fact.

At least he apologized, but he was way out of line regardless of what happened-esp at a funeral where people are grieving anyway. When I read it, my first thought was that there was more to what happened though. That is an over the top reaction to a broken chalice even if it held consecrated wine.

I’m still trying to say Friar Tuck ... okay ... So, who slipped a Mickey Finn in the priest’s wine? The Unorthodox Boner.

Regardless what happens you DO NOT make a scene at a funeral. Last month I had a relative of the deceased’s 150 pound dog bite me at the cemetery (not joking). I just wrapped my hand to stop the bleeding, hugged a couple people and drove the 15 miles to urgent care.

I did not make a scene, I did not post a rant on Facebook, I just sucked it up. I’m even resisting the urge to send them my doctor bills.

Why? The woman who died was my friend and I can’t do that to her family.

It's in moments of stress that our "true character" is revealed. Such as in this case...
