I'm not talking skimpy bikinis or even thongs, but rather swimsuits that expose almost the entire breasts of the wearers. these are suits that most young married women I know (nevermo that is) would probably not wear on the beach on a family outing yet these TBMS are wearing them with impunity. They post photos of themselves with TBM family including elderly rellies including family members who are bishops, stake presidents and former mission presidents. I am shocked because their attire is something that not too many years ago would be nothing short of scandalous in TBM minds and here they are flouting themselves.

Maybe this is a sign that practical, everyday LDS dress standards are becoming more contemporary.

Possibly, even, the effective ban on bare shoulders will begin to vanish as well?

Man, I hope so, Tevai!

I look good in my 'wife beater' t-shirt, that has "wife beater" printed on it!!

That's great! The cult's obsession with "modesty" (exclusively directed at the females) is one of its most pernicious aspects.

Glad to know more women are standing up and freeing themselves from the control of the cult!

Flout away to your hearts' content, ladies.

nOTMONOTLOGGED IN...

sounds like your body left the church but not your brain. You

still sound all holier than thou and judgemental just like a

I agree his or her post sounded a bit judgemental but I hope it was not what they meant.

I think what they meant to express was simply how shocked they were at the progress that had been made.

It can be very easy to be misunderstood when you write on this forum. People do not see our facial expressions and body language, they don't hear the irony in our voice, etc.

Love all, hate no-one, play naked.

You replied with insults and condemnation. (Which makes you appear, ignorant, rude and quite judgemental yourself.)

Nice.

If I may?

Are you declaring their swimsuits immodest or "immodest"? Are you shocked that they would dress that way or are you shocked that those around them didn't care?

Are you judging the girls for wearing something that they choose to wear. Why do you care what they are wearing?

If your shock is directed that the adults who allow this kind of clothing. Are you judging the adults for letting this behavior slide by? Or are you judging them for not being shocked themselves.

You say the post was observational but your words convey judgement.

Lastly, and I don't think I can stress this enough. Why in the name of Elohim are you looking at your niece's breasts?

I don't know what you read but it wasn't my post.... go find the right one so I don't have to. Then give that person your feelings about them looking at their neices breast. God forbid.

because if you're going to get all judgy with someone, make sure
its the right person.

Some years ago a nevermo acquaintance who works at Utah State noted that she was seeing a surprising number of Mormon girls who were showing cleavage. She knew about Mormon modesty standards so this surprised her.

So, they are ditching the sexist modesty standards and reclaiming their bodies as their own? They are having fun by the sea without giving a damn about what the RS sisters may think? They are showing lots of skin in a non-sexual context, thereby dumping the old notions about skin and sexual perversion? What's not to like?

Tell the girls to go skinny-dipping together at sunset. I'll have hot towels and bathrobes waiting for them, as well as tea and biscuits.

Maybe Mormon girls are showing more skin in general. The competition for getting a Mormon man is intense. If you’ve got ‘em, flaunt ‘em.

It's their last chance to be normal and celebrate their bodies and they are making the most of it. Same as last meal before the electric chair.

This is not new. Nothing is changing in Mormondom. My nieces were like this a decade and half ago. Lots of skin and not just bathing suits. Now they are all garment wearing TBM Mormon mothers with three kids each and counting. One has already divorced her first husband for Porn which no doubt was a trumped up charge empowered by the new Mormon Porn Hysteria---MPH.

P.S. One of my nieces actually got caught breast texting to various boys. Now she is proudly swathed in purest white with a veil and a green apron. Mormons. They always get you in the end?

I have noticed a big trend among TBM young women to disregard the modesty standards of the church when it comes to swimsuits and other casual wear. The church leaders are not speaking up, I think, because so many young people have already walked out on Mormonism and they don't want to lose any more.

I used to blame the trend on Haleigh Everts. a young LDS YouTuber who has been encouraging young female Mormons to go ahead and wear skimpy bikinis and "short-shorts", because, she proclaims, it's "not doctrine" to dress so modestly. As if there's such a clear-cut line between Mormon doctrine and Mormon culture. But then I noticed that the young were already going in the direction of flouting the old standards, knowing that the leaders are afraid that more young members will drop out if they nag. They are also tending to select petite garments when they are not petite, so they can show more skin for their fashions. Another trend is to not wear garments in online photos and videos.

I always thought that forbidding sleeveless wear and bare shoulders with spaghetti straps was going a bit too far. Also the idea that shorts have to go to the knees. Or that garments have to go to the knees!Do female shoulders and lower thighs really cause men to go ape? But as a True Blue, I did uphold the LDS modesty standards. Now I couldn't care less what anybody wears, though in my older years I don't have a figure to flaunt.

Josephina Wrote:

That bit of "policy" got into the culture rather dishonestly.
Back in the 50s the Church didn't have a policy on sleeveless
wear. They even produced little faith-promoting movies showing
good, Mormon girls wearing sleeveless wear at Church functions.

But garments have those little sleeves, and you're not supposed
to tuck etc. That meant that once a girl went thru the
Endowment hokey-pokey she couldn't wear half her wardrobe any
more. This was a huge downer.

So they had to tell the girls not to wear sleeveless wear
because when they did the Temple and started wearing Garmies
they'd be OK.

BUT, we don't talk about the Temple . . . not in any detail, and
we don't talk about Garmies in public. So they made it about
modesty. All of a sudden sleeveless wear was immodest. It
enticed young men to impure thoughts. They had stories in the
"FRIEND" about young children feeling a "bad spirit" wearing a
sun-suit from grandma (Grandma is probably a Mormon but grew up
before the anti-sleeveless-wear campaign).

Since it was about modesty that meant it should apply to
everyone. Now ANYONE wearing sleeveless wear was suddenly being
very immodest. And it seeped into the dress-standards of the
public schools. That's why Utah makes national news when some
girl is not allowed into her Senior Prom because her prom dress
doesn't have sleeves.

All because TSCC was too dishonest to talk about garmies when
they MEANT garmies.

SIN! The female body is a curse upon humanity. It must be
COVERED so that it does not entice young men (or older men who
don't honor their priesthood) to impure thoughts. Women and
girls must shun being "walking pornography." The sight of a bare
shoulder is Satan's way of leading young men astray.

Meanwhile guys can wear just about whatever they want.

If I'd have been there, I'd have gone up to them and berated them
for dressing so immodestly. I'd point out that modest is hottest
and that they'll not catch that pious, faithful RM-Eternal-
Companion dressed like a common harlots It would have been the
right thing to do.

Well, maybe not the RIGHT thing to do, but definitely the MORMON
thing to do.

Here is my take on stretching the modesty policy.
The really smart ones have left the LDS Church - so a girl's got to do what a girls's gotta do - if you can't dazzle them with brilliance... well..oh, never mind. Just show a little cleavage and see if that ups your dating schedule. Broaden the field of prospects.

I understand what the OP is saying. He's intrigued. A Facebook friend has recently posted two photos of herself wearing clothing that is sleeveless. I'm wondering if she's done with church.

I think it's LDS young women trying to get it out of their system knowing bermuda shorts, and capped sleeves are in their future.

I'm astonished. The suit is "one piece" but has an enormous oval opening that runs from the neckline almost to the navel with the widest part of the oval exposing what is typically covered.

I'm just intrigued by what is going on in the TBM world that now allows this on any otherwise TBM 30 something. (Someone who does the "see how good I am going to church" and testimony stuff on FB on a regular basis.)

Those (Dirty Old irregular Men) farts don't flinch.

It would have driven me crazy - and half way back - (as a [mormon] boy). It probably drives them crazy too, but they like it (being crazy/ dreaming/ lusting, and listing).

I just had this conversation with my TBM friend I was visiting this week. We went tubing on the lake and her neices were there in swimsuits that were fine by normal standards, but not by what I thought were TBM standards.

I asked her about which guidelines we had grown up with were her mom's guidelines and which were the church's guidelines...It was an interesting conversation. I asked about:

*can't play card games with face cards (only UNO cards)
*not having garage sales - have to donate to DI
*only wearing 1 piece, modest swim suits
*No double ear piercings
*not learning to ride a bike until age 8 (Found out that was only her mom's rule - not church based)

She and her husband said most were just cultural, but a few had come straight from the pulput from some GA over the years.

Like I said it was an interesting conversation!

its called the mormon double standard.

The girls should be able to wear whatever they feel is appropriate without being berated and put down when judged against someone else's standards.

I made a few youth leaders (young women's leaders) upset when I was a member of the bishopric. The leaders had planned some big presentation on modesty and clothing choices. The whole thing was slanted towards hiding behind clothes so the young men don't get the wrong ideas...

after the presentation I thanked the presenter then said this all boils down to two things. you should wear the clothing appropriate for the activity while showing respect for yourselves and those around you. you wouldn't wear a tux to the beach, or a swimming suit to a wedding... Second. you and you along are responsible for your thoughts and actions. it is in no way a women's responsibility to dress a certain way to prevent men from having certain thoughts. you should treat each other with respect and courtesy regardless of how they are dressed or how they act.

the room was dead silent after I spoke but afterwords a number of the leaders thanked me for saying that...
