I was told by Stephen Robinson, Mormon book author, that he "Never wants to go east of the Mississippi for the rest of my life". I doubt he did. I also had a TBM boss say the same thing. Apparently they had such a hard time being overtly Mormon in the eastern portion of the USA that they never wanted to return.

Are there Mormons who refuse to leave the Morridor because it is too humiliating to be a Mormon outside their comfort zone? Just curious if you guys know of many others.

I think it is more snobbery than fear of humiliation. The amount of smug condescension on display when some utahns go somewhere and discover they don't know what fry sauce is can be pretty comical.

I didn't know what fry sauce was. Now I wish I still didn't know.

I don't want to go East of the Rockies.

Other than the Smithsonian, They don't have much to offer me.

I haven't encountered a fear of the East but do know many Mormons who won't travel except to visit family, visit a temple or go on a mission.

I learn something new here everyday. Today's nugget is fry sauce.

Bonus! You can dip that nugget *in* the fry sauce! lol
The only time I ever encountered fry sauce was at a Dairy Queen in Southern Idaho. I'm from California.

Speaking of CA, the Mormons here all seem to aspire to move to Utah eventually (or even Missouri...'cause which place is the new Zion? I'm confused about that one). I think Mormons in the West are afraid of those 'liberal east coasters'! LOL I love my east coast nevermo and exmo family members :-D

I wish their were no Utah mormons east of the mississippi. They move in take over and ruin the wards and branches that the locals held together for years with their own ways and traditions .

Ive lived in the South for years and its really funny to see Utah transplants here. They get into high leadership rapidly because the stake higher ups are also transplants. Some of these people from Utah are lower echelon mormons but since they're from the Holy Land they get the big callings they couldn't get back in Utah.

Yes yes yessss, so much yes. I remember as a teenager when a bunch of Utah Mormons moved in (chicagoland here) and we were all so confused by their version of Mormon culture. Even my TBM dad dislikes "Utah Mormons". There's a huge distinction.

Mormons on the east coast quickly learn that absolutely no one cares about their religion. They have to learn to adapt to the wider world where people bring coffee and tea to work, no one starts meetings with a prayer, stores are open on Sundays, and there will a liquor store within a five minute drive or even supermarkets that carry alcoholic beverages.

I went to New Orleans with several Mormon coworkers for a work conference a few years ago. We were on Bourbon street. A local asked us where we were from so I told him "Utah." He asked "are you Mormon?" I told him no. His next question was "Why do Mormons hate blacks and gays?" I thought the Mormons with me were going to choke.

I did a six month assignment at the Pentagon. It was hilarious when people found out I used to be Mormon. They were very well informed on Mormonism and asked lots of questions. They wanted to know about the magic underwear, why women are treated like second class citizens, why did God change his mind about black people, and much more. So of course I answered every question, telling them about the masonic images sewn on the garments, the temple ceremony, etc.

I think the reason why so many Mormons don't like to go to the eastern U.S. is because they quickly find out the church isn't known for "family values" and all the other crap they hear the GAs tell them. People want to know about magic underwear, God living on Kolob, polygamy, and everything else.

Basically they head east and find out everyone thinks their religion is a big joke.

I've lived in the East and West, both as a Mormon and exmo. I prefer the West, but it has nothing to do with Mormonism. I like going east once in a while, like to NYC or DC.

My TBM siblings have lived all over, and their kids and grandkids live all over the world, so it's not like they can't cope with living among gentiles. But returned to UT to live out the rest of their lives among the saints. They consider UT home. I don't.

On the other hand, I've known Mormons who can't stand to be in SLC because there are too many non-Mormons there.

I know many Mormons, who say that they want their kids to be raised in Utah because it's safe and what they family needs. In other words they like the culture here and that they don't have to be the minority anywhere else.

A friend of mine married a girl from UT. They met in college and came back to live in NY.

He told me she had a tough time adjusting. I couldn't understand why since she'd served a mission outside of Utah.

She was called to a position in MIA and soon realized the kids in the ward were busier with school activities than church. Not many Mormons around and the ward covered a whole county and part of another.

Turns out she grew to love it here and made lots of non-member friends. She finished her degrees here and taught school here for years.

But I've known a couple of Utah Mormons (as we call them) that couldn't wait to beat tracks out of here.
