I like how these tribute cartoons bring back personal associated memories.

I remember, even as a Mormon, sneaking a peek at his centerfold in 1972. I felt guilty (eye roll).

The car in the cartoon also triggered being a part of the muscle car era. I remember cruising around in hot cars on dates up and down the freeways in LA and Van Nuys Blvd. The Mustangs, Camaros, and Trans Am cars are the ones I remember most.

Thanks for the memories!

Thank you, Steve, for the tribute. Smokey and the Bandit (first movie) is one of my favorites.

“I was in Woodward, Oklahoma when it came out. Happened to catch the first showing. When I walked out of the theater, the line waiting to go in looked to be a good quarter mile long.

“For a month after that, the line was still that long every time I went by.

“Fond memories.”

“. . . We are all going to miss that bright smile in movies and on TV. . . . Sooo very grateful we live in an age when the greats are recorded and their performances are saved so that they will never be forgotte. R.I.P. Mr. Reynolds. Thank you for enriching our mundane lives with sooo very many really good performances!!!!!!”

“Somewhere Jackie Gleason as Buford T. Justice is chasing Burt Reynolds as the Bandit. ;-D”
__

“They call you the Bandit. An outlaw untamed.Shackled only by freedom. You wear no man’s chain. Some say they despise you, well maybe they do,But deep down inside them, I bet they wish they were you. Bandit you’re reckless, and you live much too hard.Bandit you’re the joker in the deal of the cards. You’re a legend to the old man, a hero to the child. Bandit steals ladies heart with only a smile.”
__

“I like a guy who can laugh at himself. Burt was the kind of man you could enjoy having a beer with. Plus, he was a really good actor. R.I.P., Burt.”
__

“The man had a hell of a run, and had fun doing it.”
__

“Ain’t but one man ever born that was more perfect than Elvis.”
“Who was that?”
“BURT REYNOLDS!” (Old SNL sketch)
__

“. . . He had acting chops, too. He should have gotten an Oscar for [Deliverance]. Brando won and refused the award.”

Everyone remembers him for Smokey and the Bandit but I wonder what he would've wanted to be remembered for.

Personally, I think Deliverance and Boogie Nights.

My favorite of all his movies. Still, Smokey and the Bandit was a strong favorite among his many and devoted fans—it sure as hell wore well.

When I do these remembrance cartoons, I generally try to strike a chord that resonates across a broad audience. I work to keep them simple and hopefully let the art be the voice.

But, I tell ya, this kid damn near stole the show:

Gleason had the most insane lines, like:
“Junior, there is no way, NO WAY that you came from my loins.”

I just always tipped my hat to the quintessential "cougar", Dinah Shore, for bagging Burt.
