The big growth industry in cyber crime is web sites using your computer to mine crypto currency surreptitiously. It’s good money, hard to catch and rarely prosecuted. Since you apostates are already in the gall of iniquity, you might as well get in on the deal. Just kidding. You can get a crypto jacking blocker for some browsers. If someone is mining with your computer, you’ll see high CPU usage, the fan will come on, and it will run hotter shortening its life span.

If you have teenagers, you might want to set up a virtual machine for them and make them work in that because there’s a high probability they’ll download malware. Especially boys. Porn sites are rife with the stuff. Running one of those executables is like giving a skanky crack whore the keys to your house. You don’t need your credit card data being sold on dark web or your computer slowing to a crawl. If it’s from the web, launch or install in the sandbox (VM). Much easier to fix. I use VirtualBox because it’s free. There are others.

Will security software stop the bad stuff once it’s in? I’m not sure I’d trust it 100%. It detects by pattern matching and the sophisticated viruses are randomized so there is no pattern. It’s an arms race. So I say compartmentalize the threat.
