Shunning premarital sex may seem old-fashioned to some, but Erica Willams says nowadays celibacy is somewhat of a movement, especially among some minority women. Williams, 30, is the founder of Journey to Purity, a nonprofit in Virginia that aims to promote celibacy in women through education and community building efforts.

The Journey to Purity Meetup group has 102 members, and is limited to women. Williams says the majority of the women are black or Latina.

For these women, celibacy is a conscience and often faith-driven choice.

Black celebrities like Tamera Mowry-Housley, Meagan Good-Franklin and Ciara speaking openly about waiting to have sex inspires others to try, Williams says.

No topic is off limits for the women in the group.

From their philosophy on masturbation and pornography, to oral sex to sex dreams — they put it all out there.

Many say while masturbation, an act Williams says she once struggled with, isn’t specifically mentioned in the Bible, it is still rooted in lust.

Lust is a sin and masturbation is an outward manifestation of that sin, she says.

Still, Williams adamantly emphasizes that she doesn’t believe sex is bad.

Can't they just decide to wait to have sex without the guilt-and-shame-inducing "lust" and "sin?"

Sigh.

In my rampantly liberal university, back in the 60s, there was a sign downstairs in the lobby that said, "Virginity is its own reward."

My mother was visiting at that time (she had a sister in the same city) and saw the sign. She alleged being shocked. Talking to her sister some time later, my aunt (who was older,) laughed and told me, "Don't you buy that shrinking violet act from your mother. She got out and did her share of Hell-raising!"

My roommate and I were both still virgins when we graduated, (to our immense sorrow and regret), but we were both able to remedy that over the following summer. . .

TBM DH still believes that marriage partners should be virgins until they are married. I told him that was nonsense. First-time sex (for the female, anyway) can be painful, and needs a few days to heal. It would have been absolute torture - for me, anyway, to have had to deal with a wildly horny young groom during that healing process.

I have the suspicion that there are a lot of virgins in society. I know Issac Newton was one :)

It's sad that it is looked down on by so many people as quaint and stupid. Secretly though many (in bad marriages with child support payments to pay, and less than wonderful progeny) envy a life that isn't mixed up, or should I say screwed up?

Choosing of your own accord to remain a virgin is fine. Being shamed and bullied into it and wrapping it in piety isn't. It's the same as with choosing not to be a virgin. Your body, your mind, your choice.
