Some weeks when I work long hours, my wife's only significant contact with adults is through social media. Her life is not governed by social media addictions, but spending too much time around preschoolers exclusively has the potential to wear a person down. I'm really glad my wife is not in the Mormon church (I'm going to make a conscious effort from this point forward to refer to it as such, which I never did in the past) and does not feel any obligation to heed the words of Dr. Nelson or of any of the rest of the white-shirted bald guys in SLC.

Translation from Mormonese:

"Invite" means "you sure as hell better do what I tell you to do".

The 3 women that I saw post something about it didn't mention that it was for women only. And of course they have to announce to the world on social media that they will be fasting from social media...LOL They were also challenged to read the BOM by the end of the year. It's all about control and keeping women down.

I've seen this already as well. To me it reeks of the Pharisee (Luke 18:11) loudly thanking God that he was better than others. Jesus said that we shouldn't make a display of praying on street corners or show up in public in an unkempt state to make it obvious to the world that we have been fasting. Similarly, wouldn't Jesus expect the same thing from those taking on social media fasts? Wouldn't it be more righteous to quietly go about one's business of taking time off from social media rather than making a loud public proclamation of it?

It reminds me of one of my receptionists who makes a huge deal of not eating meat on days of Lent during which meat abstention is requested. My wife saw the woman in Jack in the Box on Ash Wednesday, telling the cashier - so loudly that it was probably heard in the parking lot - NOT to put any bacon or sausage on her tray even though it came with her meal because she was NOT going to eat it on Ash Wednesday. She could have tossed the bacon or sausage, or she could have given it to someone else, or she could have more quietly requested not to have the bacon or sausage and let the cashier and anyone else who happened to hear assume that she was vegetarian or perhaps allergic to bacon or sausage, but then she wouldn't have gotten the buzz that she got from proclaiming her righteousness so loudly. Pharisee-like behavior can be found among those on the membership rolls of all churches, but MORMONS seem especially prone to calling attention to their religious observances.

My Grandmother was like this. Sigh. Sooooooo embarrassing. We would go to a place like Denny's and she would have to make a big LOUD (we are MORMON) demand to have the coffee cups removed from the table. Then they would have to bring one back and a pot of hot water so she could make her nasty ass Postum. And of course, there had to be the big, LOUD prayer production.

There went LDS Dating sites for 10 days.. ... oh..wait..when does it start, is it staggered? Holy cow, people could be out of touch continually... 10 + 10 + 10 + there went the whole month..... every month. Hmmm. I must be missing something. That can't be right...

Aren’t women offended that they were singled out? As if all women do is sit around and put lint on their husband’s socks all day. The prophet just told you you are worthless, you Mormon women!

I agree with this. He seems to be under the impression that women don't have any real responsibilities other than puttering around the house and chasing after kids.

He couldn't possibly have asked the men to do this. They need to stay connected to the outside world for their jerbs!

Haha exactly. They know that the fact that the word Mormon is now a bad word is going to cause a frenzy...I don't think a 10-day social media fast is long enough! LOL

There's way too much talk about women's rights out there currently. I think the church might be trying to keep Mormon women away from places where they might see some of the discussions that might influence their opinions.

A lot of us have suggested that the church wants its members off the internet. This just might be a mini-test to see if the church can get away with it.

I don't think this is the first time they've requested (commanded) a social media fast. They want their members to feel like they have control over their own lives, but they actually don't.

As a kid I was seriously confused about the fact we were told we had 'free agency', yet I could feel the weight of the oppressive thumb of religion via my parents. One of my first shelf items.

I think tssc finally figured out that the term 'free agency' was giving the members too much permission to 'sin'. So of course they had to rename that too.

OMG! This explains why our neighbor's little kids were at the door, hand delivering an invitation to my "chosen to be baptized" granddaughter, for a Mormon activity. They couldn't email her, like they usually do! Women are really taking this seriously!

There will be a certain number of believers that follow along like sheep. The younger generations have shown they are not so easily led. They tend to want to think for themselves and some of this stuff is so bizarre it doesn't pass even the smallest smell test.

Yes, they have had a fast from social media once this past summer or sometime in the past 7 months while my daughter was in Alaska.

I also agree that they don't need to announce they will be gone for 10 days. Why not just stop being on social media for 10 days.

Now, as a mormon woman, this would bug me. Most things I don't care about. I would be the one that didn't say anything about it and I'd think long and hard about not being on social media and letting the "prophet" determine that for me. No internet? Is that it? Well, there goes the income. I wouldn't do it. At least in my older years, like 25 to 36. Then I was out after that.

On Twitter I announced that I would try to fill in the gap for those fasting. So far I've tweeted three multi-part tweets. Wow, time consuming to compose them. And yes, about Mormon topics. And no, I will never use any word other than Mormon, although I did use the word "church" once.

Probably not. It's easy enough to separate email from social media. The again,it's easy enough to log onto Instagram for just a few minutes after a person finishes email correspondence.

I go with TBM BF to a FHE with several over 55 members. Usually there are about 35 people that are present. I really like these people and it is always fun. Anyway the social media fast was brought up. The women just looked at each other and laughed. Many still work and even if they are retired, social media is necessary for communicating with kids, and many are on this or that committee in the neighborhood. Not only that, they just want to be treated like adults. One said she would do it if her husband did it too. He look at her like that would never happen.
All are old enough to know how many times somebody would bring up changing the name of Mormon. They were upset about the name change of the choir. Many said their friends from around the country were not happy either and feel Nelson is now just trying to make his mark.

Nelson (or maybe it's really Wendy behind all this) needs to get a clue. There are many people who do their sales via social media...so people (women only) are supposed to put their livelihood on hiatus because this 'prophet' of theirs wants to make his mark? Absurd. Just a control tactic.

If they're women, they have no business working. So there.

My TBM dad told me he didn't have to do the fast because he's a man. And according to him, men don't do social media much because they already have more important things to do. Ugh.

I think that sentiment is shared with the Q15.

Keep in mind that part of the program will be for each woman to reflect upon what she has learned and how she now has a renewed sense of purpose.

Seriously...just the WOMEN have this issue on social media and need to take stock of the influences and what is wounding their spirit??

I'm hearing from Mormon woman who are not playing along with this "fast" thingy. Or modifying it to suit their needs. I'm still getting posts. Mormon . org has not been changed, either.

Without referencing anything about the church, one of my TBM sisters posted she was taking a break from Facebook for a few days. But then two days later she commented on travel photo I posted.

Telling members what to do in regards to this screams cult. It's also sexist only "inviting" the women to stay off social media. Why not tell the men too?

I asked the same thing and was told that men will be invited to do so in the spring :D

That was some fast thinking! See- we're not sexist! Really we're not! See, we also put restrictions on the men (after we get in trouble)!!!

The men-leasthood need the portal to scare the gross-pill. He's hoping that will make the men more attracted to them, and spark light in the lives, and they'll all die sadly before ever.

Men/ the misleaders need to stay connected, maybe, or they would mock him, as they sneak a peak at the web [or get caught trying], or they are holding that card for spring, when men need to get back out in the fields, before they back their rolls rice out of the paddies and shattucks and gay roges. Maybe they also need it for tracking, pestering and bothering.

Either way, it's kind of insulting...and not just a little bit weird.

If they just said that people should try to have some balance in their lives and govern themselves well so as to avoid obsessive, time wastage on social media or other activities of sometimes dubious value, without reference to gender, I would have thought: "Yeah, this is one of those common sense ideas that they get right once in a while...kind of like when they encourage people not to drink so much that their livers explode."

But zeroing in on women and making it a "fast" just makes it scream: "CULT! CULT! CULT! WACKY CULT!"
