Money vs. Religion: It would have been much cheaper to just make the stupid cake...

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-northern-ireland-45789759

The Christian owners of a Northern Ireland bakery have won their appeal in the so-called "gay cake" discrimination case.

The UK's highest court ruled that Ashers bakery's refusal to make a cake with a slogan supporting same-sex marriage was not discriminatory.

The five justices on the Supreme Court were unanimous in their judgement.

The high-profile dispute began in 2014 when the bakery refused to make a cake with the slogan "Support Gay Marriage".

Was it decided by men in long wigs?

and silk stockings...

Isn't that the only way to ensure justice? Normally-dressed men and women have no idea what justice is. It's the wig that does it.

I'm a supporter of equal rights, however, I agree with the UK courts on this one.

I think if the cake buyer had just asked for a cake that said "Congratulations Adam and Steve" then I would have seen the case acting out differently. Instead the prospective cake buyer chose to ask for a phrase that the baker could legitimately claim he wouldn't provide for anyone, irrespective of sexual orientation.

This cake phrase was a mistake by the buyer that gave the out to the bakery.

I agree. No different to holding a gun to your head and saying 'write this or else.'

Asking them to write the overtly-political "Support gay marriage" meant that their rights came into play.

I'm guessing those judges were all roman catholic.

The judges were London based, and Northern Ireland is more of a Protestant part of Ireland, hence the "troubles" in that part of the world.

There aren't very many catholics in the UK, proportionally. There are quite a few in the Northern cities such as Manchester and Liverpool (19th-century Irish immigrants, mainly) where I went to University, but in the south, where I come from (Surrey), they are very few and far between.

The first time I even met a catholic, I was 14...

The English stirred up divide and conquer to hold onto Ireland after the 1798 Protestant nationalist rebellion against English rule.

And England is still there. And two other neighbouring countries.

I'm mad enough to punch someone who is not a member of UB40.

"According to a New York Times report, Brett Kavanaugh, coming from a UB40 concert, got into an altercation after mistaking a man for the lead singer of the band.

What happened?

Kavanaugh was accused of throwing ice at a man in 1985. This incident was first referenced in a statement made by Kavanaugh's former classmate Chad Ludington, now an associate professor of history at North Carolina State University, who said Kavanaugh was often "belligerent and aggressive" when he drank."

Here’s what I would do. Go get a Betty Crocker cake mix. Get a tube of frosting and write Support Gay Rights on it, or Support UB40 for Dave.

You bring it to whatever event, and everybody have some for God’s sake!

This cake shit is getting tiresome.

Tiresome, yes, but nevertheless important.

Every society must decide how it is going to manage these intersections of belief and civil rights.

Important, absolutely !

But I wonder if many or most of these lawsuits have nothing to do with gay rights —- but are launched by opportunists who may not care about gay people or religious belief. Opportunists who are not looking for a cake--only a lawsuit.

I think usually not. Law suits are immensely difficult and rarely yield more than they cost.

That is particularly true in the UK and Europe, where awards are generally much more modest than in the US.

Thw whole thing is a major joke to me. It is my opinion that in a free society I may do business with whomsoever I please. Other than that it is a slave society. (IN MY OPINION ONLY. YOU ARE ALL ENTITLED TO YOURS.)

I wonder if they would have had a problem with, "Support Polygamy?"

And the folk requesting it have the right to take their business elsewhere. However, this was a deliberate attempt to bully someone out of homophobia (which never works). They knew the views of the owners, and went there to stir up trouble and have them persecuted for having a different point of view.

I'm glad this has been thrown out. It amazes me how illiberal so called "liberals" are (a misuse of that title). Also if you can't tolerate people having a different view e.g. against gay marriage, you are yourself intolerant. Tolerance is not about forcing people to do things and bullying them.

Discrimination is wrong.

There is no excuse.

In today's world it would make no sense -- the 1950s are long gone.

For that kind of money, I would jump out of a “support gay marriage” cake.

This is great news, every establishment should have the right to express their religious beliefs. It's a freedom of religion thing, we call that the 1st amendment in the US.

So Moslems should be able to kill people in the name of Jihad in the United States? Since it's a First Amendment thing.

Of course not.
