I’ve been corrected by my own family when I’m just casually talking and use the word “Mormon.” I’ve seen people at church and work get corrected (sometimes rudely).

I’m so tired of it! I’m a Mormon, I should be able to call myself whatever I want. And the pure arrogance of saying “The Church”, “Church members,” or “Saints” is mind boggling.

Sometimes I wonder what life is like outside of Utah where Mormonism is irrelevant. Must be nice.

It's good. At least when it comes to not having to have people at work (mormon or not) talk about their church all the time. And where the Q15 doesn't control state politics.

And, yeah, they're mormons. Don't give into the oddball whims of a temporary leader. Odds are good that the next one will rescind this anyway!

"The Church" is only going to work in Utah. Here, they'd say, "What church?"

If they think that I'm going to sit here and say the entire long name every time, they're crazy.

They're going to find themselves being called, "The Church of Yada Yada Yada."

The whole excuse is that Jesus is sad because they don't accurately refer to his church using his name.

But "The Church" doesn't use his name. By itself "church" is an ambiguous noun.

And "The Church" can be shorthand for any of the following official organization names (among many others):

The Church of Scientology
The Church of England
The Church of Satan

They've gone totally bonkers.

They've created a problematic solution for a problem that wasn't really a problem and now everyone is starting to think that the people formerly known as Mormons are just stupid jerks.

Poor Jesus. He's sad if his name isn't on and in everything.

Otherwise, apparently people won't know which Christian savior they are worshiping (eye roll).

Stand up for yourself. Push back. Next time they attempt to correct you, say "I said MORMON and I mean MORMON!" Then when they try to shame you again, interrupt them with "MORMON!!" as often as necessary, at whatever volume necessary, to drive your point home, that you refuse to be controlled by them.

Mormons aren't used to dealing with people with spines.

The next time you are "corrected" for saying the mormon name, simply say, "I'm sorry, I meant to say The Church of Jesus H. Christ of Latter Day Saints. Is that better?"

If Mormon church meetings focused on Christ instead of Joseph Smith, tithing, porn, temple attendance, etc., maybe they wouldn't have felt the need to change the name in order to remind people that they believe in Christ.

When the Library of Congress quits using Mormon Church as the valid subject heading for books about Mormonism, we'll know that Nelson's ploy worked. Until that time Mormons will always be Mormons. Right now the Library of Congress uses "Mormons" and "Mormon Church". They know that people looking for a book or web site are still going to look under the subject heading Mormon.
I wonder how the BYU library will handle this.

Seems like a double standard, no? If a transgendered person wants to be called by their preferred pronoun, even if they are biologically the other sex, why can't mormons choose to be called by their preferred identity?

Why does it bother you so much?

1. her or him or they or ze is much shorter than The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints.

2. "The Church" there are a whole lot of churches around. Which one are you talking about?

3. “Church of Jesus Christ” yeah, that will go over well with other christian churches. Plus, I think there is legally already one.

4. "restored Church of Jesus Christ" see the first part of number 3.

5. “members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints”, see number 1.

6. Some Mormons WANT to be called Mormons. See the I'm A Mormon campaign.

7. Getting man-splained by an 18 year old kid makes my claws come out.

"1. her or him or they or ze is much shorter than The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints."

True, but the list of pronouns is so long now, MUCH longer than the name of the COJCOLDS.

"6. Some Mormons WANT to be called Mormons. See the I'm A Mormon campaign."

That's not a current campaign, right? That was in the past.

"7. Getting man-splained by an 18 year old kid makes my claws come out."

Like you said, they're just kids, right? And man-splaining is not a thing. It's a sexist term and the behavior it describes exists just as much in women as it does men.

1. The list of pronouns true, but you only use one at a time. Kind of like saying Mormon.

6. "I don't think we teach that." Plus, I can tell you right off the top of my head over 20 that I personally know that prefer calling themselves Mormon.

7. No. Not when the 18-year old thinks he is better than you, because he thinks he has special powers. It describes it perfectly.

Because it really isn't their preferred identity. It's Nelson's preferred identity. You average MORMON couldn't have cared less a few months ago whether or not they were called MORMONS. But now they care, only because they've been told to care. When they reflexively correct others' use of the word MORMON, it's nothing more than virtue signaling on their part, and means only that they blindly and mindlessly follow any ridiculous nonsense spewed by the current MORMON so-called prophet.

I am under no obligation to honor or respect blind obedience, by MORMONS or anyone else.

LOL. Don't need to read minds. See, when MORMONS like you get all butt-hurt, they make no secret of how offended they are. For example, when Tommy Monson (remember him? the guy in charge of "I'm a MORMON" and "Meet the MORMONS"?) croaked, all the MORMONS got in a lather when his NY Times obituary wasn't fawning and sugary enough for their delicate MORMON sensibilities. Yup, it bothered them to no end, and they made sure everyone knew it.

Were you here a few months ago, whining about our use of MORMON? No you were not. But now you are, simply because Rusty's trying desperately to eliminate the word MORMON, and you must follow wherever he leads. Would you be bitching and moaning to us if Rusty had never made this an issue?

If we were to abandon the word MORMON, it would be tantamount to obeying your delusional MORMON prophet. We don't have to follow your ridiculous fucking MORMON blowhard prophet, or abide by his asinine rules.

Nice try, hmmamon's MORMON sock puppet. Wait… on second thought, that's not accurate. It's not a nice try at all; in fact it's rather pathetic. Being unable to directly refute my assertion and instead having to resort to attacking me? Kind of sad, in a passive-aggressive way. Your defense of the fraudulent MORMON church needs some work.

Did you enjoy cleaning the MORMON building yesterday? Scrubbing the Holy Toilet of The Lord™ (AKA "John the Beloved")?

Oh, and Satan thanks you for the victories he's gained because of your continued presence on this thread. He asks that you remain so he can keep piling up the wins.

It's weird that you think I'm LDS. I'm not. I used to be, but then I resigned.

I can tell you with certainty, as many here will freely admit, that I hated being called a mormon even when I was a faithful LDS.

Now they don't want to be called mormon, and I think the decently human thing to do is to respect that. You know, do unto others as you would have them do unto you? That's still a valid lesson.

Of course you're under no obligation to honor or respect LDS or anyone else, but it would be a better world if you did.

Perhaps you haven't considered the dishonesty in your response here. When I used the word mormon, it was a direct reference to the label that LDS don't identify with anymore.

When I was referring to LDS directly I said LDS, because that's the respectful thing to do. I can be respectful to LDS as human beings even if I think their church and beliefs are ridiculous.

Just a word to the wise: it's ok to change your mind about things. We all changed our minds about the LDS church. LDS can change their minds about how they want to be labeled (regardless of their reasons). You can change your mind about straw-manning other people's points of view to score cheap points.

But this is Nelson's project, has been since 1990. Look it up. No other church "authority" ever cared enough to make it an issue. It's all on him.

And it's obvious to me from reading his talk that Rusty doesn't care about the context for using MORMON. If it's used as a nickname *in any way* instead of (for example) referring to the BOM, it's a victory for Satan and therefore verboten. And you did that, like it or not. Had you made the effort, you could have phrased your comments in a way that didn't include MORMON and LDS. But you didn't. So go ahead and defend your actions, but from all appearances Rusty would have disapproved of your use of MORMON the way you did.

So yeah, I don't accept your "dishonest" label, and instead I'll throw the "disingenuous" label onto you. What's fair for one, right?

I'll give you the last word if you want. I've got better things to do than argue about the word MORMON.

It would be a better world if Mormons didn't expect everyone else to adhere to their silly rules.

This policy will in all likelihood live and die with Russel Nelson, who is 93 years old. He's had this bee up his bonnet for decades now. Do you think that any other "profit" will care about it?

Next time it comes up. Sorry if I upset you - is Church of Jesus Christ OK to say?

Most likely they will respond - YES.

If so - ask why it is OK to call their church by the name of another legally recognized Church of that name?

Yep, The Church of Jesus Christ is a legal name for the Bickertonite group that was formed after Joseph Smith lost the gunfight.

My favorite comebacks always start with the phrase "See, this is why no one respects Mormons" or, in this case "See, this is why no one respects Mormons. Because it's considered very bad manners to correct another adult so when Mormons do that, they get a reputation of being crass and classless."

They always stop short at the idea "No one respects Mormons" because they are taught everyone admires them and wants to be like them - They are so stunned by the idea anyone doesn't respect them so that they shut up long enough for you to finish your thought.

They can call themselves whatever they like but to other Christians, "The Church" is the body of believers, of whatever denomination. Maybe saying "No, what denomination are you?" after they claim to be part of the church might clue them into the fact they aren't the only church in town. That being said, I know some pretty devout, high-ranking Mormons, that think this whole debate is a huge waste of time when there are other issues the church should be looking at.

Two thoughts on this topic:

1.) Suppose you go out and commit a lot of crimes. Suppose that you're the next Bebedict Arnold or the next Charles Mansen. Could you then just change your name and then start out again with a clean reputation under your new name?

2.) Any time a person speaks up in opposition to mormon church leaders, their words and they themselves are labeled as anti-mormon. So when do the church listen to us, and address us and our concerns with respect and without slapping a label on us and our words? We should at least call them what they themselves have called themselves for most of their history, least they escape the karma of their own actions and beliefs (see #1 above).

Maybe it's the first step towards rejecting the book of Mormon in the future, or only regarding it as inspired writings rather than scripture from god. Rejecting the term Mormon is just subtly beginning to move themselves away from Smith's work of fiction.

Constant Amazing:

How MORMONS focus & fuss about & around 'issues' (genuine or made-up) 95% around the edges of things, religious or not:

same-gender relationships

medical-uses for herbs

at the same time, We see

school children being massacred in & close to their classes
extremists like the Mr. W.J & others
wackos with automatic weapons have their way after 'legally' purchasing guns... No Problem!
a POTUS who encourages violence against his 'enemies' (anyone who doesn't agree with him, btw)

name focus is this weeks issue, what will they come up with next? What real concerns will 'the prophet' be Absolutely Silent on?

Beam Me Up, Mr. Scott!

So what is the proper (official) usage for "Ex-Mormon"? If someone tells me I cannot call myself an ex-Mormon anymore I'll just let them know they forgot to send me the memo and that when I resigned they were still calling themselves Mormons. So I should be grandfathered in on the terminology.
