TSCC has also noticed that the negativity is greater internationally than domestically.

Just change the name and all that negativity will vanish? It's all in the name and nothing to do with the reputation?

Laughing my tush off !!!!

The Mormons never question why their prophets need to rely on surveys, when they have the power of direct revelation from God.

This.

Any prophet who explains and justifies his prophecy and looks to add third party validation, does not believe the prophecy or in his ability to prophecy in the first place.

that maybe the negative connotations are a result of the history and beliefs of the organization and people that the word refers to and NOT because the word itself is a problem.

It's like saying that surveys show that the phrase "drinking and driving" carries a lot of negative connotation. Obviously, it's not because the word "driving" makes people feel negative or that the word "drinking" makes people feel bad. It's because "drinking and driving" refers to certain actions that are factually associated with many negative consequences.

But a non-thinking and dishonest person would just like to hide the underlying problems by prohibiting people from using the words that are customarily used to refer to the underlying problems.

"Hey, let's not say 'heart attack' anymore. Let's say 'heart vacation' because it's much more positive and doesn't have negative connotations!"

Here in Australia the word Mormon means absolutely nothing.

Lds church means nothing.

Now buy someone a beer.... THAT means something!

We should only use the full, proper name: "myocardial infarction." God is offended when we say the nickname "heart attack" or the abbreviation "M.I."

The song "I Believe" in The Book of Mormon musical is hilarious not because it contains the word Mormon, but because of the batshit crazy theology.

Not to worry, Rusty. The FLDS will keep the name alive, and even strengthen the meme the rest of the world has (if they have any meme at all) that the FKAM Church has something to do with polygamy.

Meanwhile, Mitt, not Rusty, will be the public face of Mormonism to the wider world, for better or for worse. That'll perk up LDS Inc's appeal to Millennials!!

Deck chairs. Titanic.

Yup. The word "Mormon" was the least of their problems.

And just try to say "FKAM" three times in a row without laughing your ass off.

For most of the world "Mormon" or "Latter-day Saint" doesn't mean much of anything beyond some annoying teenagers with name tags trying to get them to change religions.

It's fun watching a 93 year old heart surgeon frantically rearrange the chairs on the deck of the Titanic thinking it will make any kind of difference.

Pop open a cold beer and enjoy the show folks.

It sounds to me as though LDS,Inc. did some kind of survey or focus group and threw out the name Mormon and the names LDS, and Latter-day Saints. Most people had probably heard of Mormons and had a negative opinion. And many who had a vague knowledge of what Mormon meant probably didn't know that LDS and Latter-day Saint meant the same thing. So, VOILA, just start using LDS and Latter-day Saint and the negativity goes away.... NOT!

As others have said, this has been tried before and it just doesn't work. When I say "LDS", you say "What?" and then, for clarification, everyone says "Mormon".

You must not have gotten the memo. LDS is on the forbidden list too. I think Latter-day Saint is also verboten. Anything under eight syllables does not meet the pomposity threshold.

I asked a missionary (on the talk to a mormon chat site) when they were completely baffled by AOTFOTCOJCLDS they said latterday saint would be ok and raised no objection to LDS. Strange.

If somebody starts a "religion" and has a book at it's center titled, "Book of Dummies", "Book of Fools", or "Book of Morons", I'm going to call them Dummies, Morons, or Fools, no matter what they call themselves - -or want to be called - interchangeably, or periodically.

There's nothing wrong with the name Mormon. The negative connotation isn't going to change by changing the name. It would be like Linus from the Peanuts strip trying to change his name to something else with the hope that his smelly odor will somehow be different if he were called Odie.

Mormons if they're to be respected at all, need to begin by accepting themselves first and foremost. Otherwise, they may as well just scrap the whole religious cult thingy.

The negative connotation?

Quit ripping off everybody you deal with

Quit looking down your nose when dealing with "Non Members"

Quit sodomizing (Not the only church with this problem) children and acting like it's a religions responsibility to do so

Start here. But the list is longer.

in the April 1996 CBS 60 Minutes piece on MORmONISM, Gordon BS Hinckley strangely responded Mike Wallace's critical probing of THE (MORmON) church / religion.

Hinckley suddenly and oddly just blurted out "we're not a weird people" in response to Mike Wallace. Why did Hinckley do that?
-because Hinckley had been the head of LDS inc PR for decades, and in it that capacity Hinckley had seen the word "weird" used very prominently by outsiders to describe MORmON beliefs as people were surveyed after seeing an LDS inc PR presentation on MORmONISM at a public venue.

MORmONISM IS WEIRD !!!!! MORmONISM by any other name is STILL MORmONISM /Mentall Illness.

Mormonism seems to have lots of contradictions, doesn't it?

As sensitive as Nelson & his posse is about the name for ChurchCo, the GAs are very thick-skinned about staying in line with the Basic, Core Essentials of Christ-Like living;

I count those as Honesty & Kindness, Respect for others;
when appropriate, correcting past mistakes (Repentance & Forgiving).

Silly Me!

A new label may help for a while.

But it's not the label that's the problem.
