Obviously, it's not because the word "driving" makes people feel negative or that the word "drinking" makes people feel bad. It's because "drinking and driving" refers to certain actions that are factually associated with many negative consequences.

But a non-thinking and dishonest person would just like to hide the underlying problems by prohibiting people from using the words that are customarily used to refer to the underlying problems.

It sounds to me as though LDS,Inc. did some kind of survey or focus group and threw out the name Mormon and the names LDS, and Latter-day Saints. Most people had probably heard of Mormons and had a negative opinion. And many who had a vague knowledge of what Mormon meant probably didn't know that LDS and Latter-day Saint meant the same thing. So, VOILA, just start using LDS and Latter-day Saint and the negativity goes away.... NOT!

As others have said, this has been tried before and it just doesn't work. When I say "LDS", you say "What?" and then, for clarification, everyone says "Mormon".

You must not have gotten the memo. LDS is on the forbidden list too. I think Latter-day Saint is also verboten. Anything under eight syllables does not meet the pomposity threshold.

I asked a missionary (on the talk to a mormon chat site) when they were completely baffled by AOTFOTCOJCLDS they said latterday saint would be ok and raised no objection to LDS. Strange.

If somebody starts a "religion" and has a book at it's center titled, "Book of Dummies", "Book of Fools", or "Book of Morons", I'm going to call them Dummies, Morons, or Fools, no matter what they call themselves - -or want to be called - interchangeably, or periodically.

There's nothing wrong with the name Mormon. The negative connotation isn't going to change by changing the name. It would be like Linus from the Peanuts strip trying to change his name to something else with the hope that his smelly odor will somehow be different if he were called Odie.

Mormons if they're to be respected at all, need to begin by accepting themselves first and foremost. Otherwise, they may as well just scrap the whole religious cult thingy.
