This is OT, except for the fact that most of the victims here were LDS and the churches held funerals for days. I went to a high school in the district and there was a plaque or memorial on the wall in the lobby, and that was 30 years later. This link is a blog-type post with LOTS of details.

December 1st is the 80th anniversary, and to date is still the worst train/bus crash in US history..

When I lived in Utah in the '70s there were a lot of car-train accidents. It seemed like there were one or two a week and the astonishing thing was that most cases weren't from people thinking they could beat the train. They hit trains that were already going through the crossing.

Utah must have a lot of long, straight roads.

Today on the way to work traffic was backed up for a few miles. Part of the line was on a section of the road that is crossed by train tracks. There are the standard drop down barriers and flashing light warning signs etc.

Three absolute future winners of the Darwin Award (an award for people that dies in a spectacularly idiotic way) were stopped on the tracks. Yup. Couldn't wait at the first barrier until traffic was clear on the other side of the tracks. Nope. They had to pull forward and stop on the tracks. No where for them to go if a train came either.

And yes, it involves stupidity at the train crossing:
