What a horrible thing to happen to her. Many students witnessed it. She is in critical condition. Speculation abounds. So Sad!

I would be EXTREMELY surprised if a 4-story fall is survived.

Maybe finding out the church isn’t true was too much.

I'm sure we're all very sorry this has happened.

Even with that, given adequate railings, etc. police will have a possible suicide attempt somewhere in their thinking. This isn't something our bodies are designed (?) to manage.

Suicide is growing, serious problem 'epidemic' these days, they'll be looking for reasons of depression chronic or acute including school reasons, money reasons, relationship problems.

All of us wish her & family to do well.

BYU responded very poorly, they allowed students to congregate and loiter around the poor girl and then around the spot where she landed after she was taken to the hospital. They should have dismissed classes and closed the building as soon as humanly possible. Instead it took them a full two hours to close the building.

BYU is the worst place to be for someone who needs emotional support. I hope that she gets the help she needs from someone who isn't trying to save her soul.

OMG. I hope she makes it, and gets the help she needs.

I guess it's a good sign if she's still alive, 1st 24 hours is a good sign unless her functions are severely compromised / nearly all on life support...

'of course' no one could foresee this specifically, but could have in general.

me: a trauma team should have been on-call available to go directly to the scene, students in the building should have been escorted out a far exit by staff.

Public suicide attempts are rare. I have to wonder about the quality of mental health counseling at BYU, given that the front line is minimally trained student ward bishops. There’s also a presumed lack of confidentiality, so problems that could run afoul of the HCO prevent students from getting professional help.

MORmONISM is mental illness
being at BYU is concentrated MORmONISM which means concentrated mental illness

The real surprise is that this kind of thing (attempted suicide) does not happen FAR MORE often with in MORmONISM, as well as the kind of thing that happened to Brenda Wright Lafferty.

Sadly, that’s not hyperbole. Most Mormons live their lives running the Mormon “treadmill to heaven” while waiting to die.

The problem remains: Mormonism can and does kill people. Some fast, some slow. It’s not your friend.

When I was depressed, I avoided high places b/c of temptation to jump, maybe there's a psychological connection.

Waaaaaaayyyyy back in the day when I attended BYU, I had a friend who worked "behind the scenes". He used to tell me that I would be shocked at the number of jumper suicides at BYU...all kept under wraps. He said they usually occurred in elevator shafts or off of rooftops (think Deseret Towers).

This one appears to be too "public" to hide. Their best attempt is to call it a "fall".

I am troubled by the lack of information of this.

I'm guessing the family is knowing she's in deep life support now.
How to proceed isn't an easy path for them.

the SL Trib is reporting that the woman who jumped has died in the hospital.

Sad for all, in more ways than one.

is there will be statements made about her having some sin she was dealing with and couldn't face, the sin of suicide. She will be blamed, as well as the parents, not the church, not the leaders, not BYU.

Dave Bednar has already addressed the cause of this poor girl's depression. He told everyone yesterday at a BYU devotional that he is heartbroken by what happened and that all should remember that "joy is primarily spiritual".

The fucking asswipe told everyone that the reason you aren't happy is that you aren't spiritual enough. The reason why this girl was sad was because "fun is primarily temporal". She was trying to have fun and wasn't trying to have joy.

I never attended BYU, but was down the street at the other depressing institution called the MTC. I never felt like an individual, but a cog in a giant wheel. Unlike the public universities that I attended, these church run institutions crush one's sense of identity.
