Holland pointed out that Mormons aren't creedal (though I do think that the articles of faith could be said to be a creed)

I couldn't help but laugh at how lost Mormons, wanting to be accepted within mainstream Christianity, would be lost at this point in the service.

Yes, I know many people, Mormon or otherwise, would be lost due to the secular nature of the country now, but being a exMo just made it extra funny to me.

Below is the Apostles Creed. What in it, other than stating belief in the holy catholic church (which is the church universal, not the church of Rome), is so repellent to LDS?


I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.

and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,

One slight point. Holland would have been better served using appropriate language. He should have said that Mormonism isn't ecumenical. When he said that Mormons aren't creedal he is ignoring a multitude of creeds that Mormonism has.

The Articles of Faith are the most well known but they aren't the most recited. I think the most recited would be the Young Woman's Theme and D&C 4. The Proclamation to the World, The Church Handbook, and For the Strength of Youth are creeds as well.

"creed" may be thought of as a brief, succinct statement, but What About all the GC talks/speeches?

Mormonism isn't creedal. A creed is like a constitution: it legitimizes the status quo and gives people an independent measure of doctrine; it is a constraint on the organization's power.

Recall when someone gave a speech in the early church, saying that the scriptures were God's irrevocable word and the standard for all things. Then BY stood up and said he would throw away the scriptures and follow the prophets if a conflict ever arose. His was of course the position that received Joseph's approval.

The same is true today. Holland is saying that because Mormons have prophets who speak to God, there is no need for a definitive statement of doctrine. That is the policy of the apostles, who want no constraints on what they might teach in the future.

We (as mormons in general) were RARELY taught the history of Christianity. No, we were taught the history of MORMONISM.

I can't think of anyone I knew as a Mormon who knew the history of Christianity. Not.One.
