For those raised in Mormonism, it's really their entire culture as it's all they've "known" since birth. They've mostly only associated with other cult members, especially in Utah.
They try too, but by then it is harder than in, say, middle or high school. Plus, diehard Believers (Mo or otherwise,) will just avoid universities, or only attend ones that reinforce their prexisting beliefs..
It's currently on best-seller lists. I just read it on Kindle. The author was one of a gaggle of kids raised by nutty Mormon parents. It is definitely worth reading, especially for those of us who escaped.
I just think humans are programed to believe, not all but a lot, and when u believe in something u just believe it, no amount of logic will change a person, it must come from within, I say belief will keep a person from truth, I told my daughter as long as she believes in Joseph, she can't ever learn the truth about him. You can apply this to so many aspects of belief.
Why do LDS not drink coffee, belief. What hell has that go to do with anything, but u believe it so u can't see the truth about it, its so simple, but not if u believe.
It's worth keeping in mind that 2/3rds of nominal Mormons have in fact dumped Mormonism. The other third may be obstinate, but a substantial majority of Mormons changed their minds.
You don't change minds. You learn. You can't learn if you already "KNOW."
Realizing you know nothing is freeing. Although it's good to know to look both ways when crossing the street. Not doing so could be a little *too* freeing.
