It seems to me that this is a result of not having enough people to fill the wards and branches, let alone staff them. In places that are not Utah, it must be a real problem.

Maybe they're thinking ahead to keeping people nominally engaged so that they still pay tithing and don't just quit, never to be heard from again?

Is this just some kind of nominal retention effort?

Its all about the money. It's saving them money. 1 hour cut from 30,000 congregations means 30,000 saved hours per week, or 120,000 saved hours per month. That adds up to quite a bit of savings so they can buy another city, mall, investment, brothel or something.

To put this in another way, because of the 1 hour cut, each month the church saves just about 14 years... that's right YEARS of total building usage. Imagine just the cost of 14 years of electricity alone... so yes... its all about the money.

sounds like Dilbert's boss, when he muses about cutting costs enough/ so much that their company will no longer have to be bothered with making any products in order to be profitable.

I received a schedule with the new changes and it looks like they also cut the ward council meetings from every Sunday down to 2 Sundays a month.

Because, it used to be not 3 hours but 4 hours to keep the lights and heat on: 9-10 sacrament, 10-11 classes, 11-12 Relief Society etc. and 12-1 Ward council.

From the new schedule it looks like ward council is now at 9 am only 2 Sundays per month.

I could have that wrong but that's what it looked like to me.

So it looks like cost-saving to me.

Not only that, but there are less members to gossip about and openly criticize!

Who can they bitch and moan about if most of ward has left the church? The non-member cashier with facial tattoos?

It's clearly a cost savings to the church. I'm just wondering if it's also to deal with places that are struggling to staff a ward or branch.

Some wards are in dire needs. They are even asking less-actives and members with WoW problems to fill certain staffing-calling issues.

Hey, they even tried to get my wife to attend. The bishop is a long time friend of the family. He said "We (the ward) don't care if you can only attend once a month or wear pants to church. We really need a person to help with the young women. You would only have to come for the SS portion if you want."

An organization on the verge of collapse.

The collapse can't come soon enough!

When a business is past its peak and going down, it begins to cannibalize itself with cutbacks. I'm glad I lived long enough to see the fraud beginning to fail.

What do you think will become of the temples they eventually close? Too 'sacred' to sell? Too expensive to disassemble?

Good question. If the money is green, I'm pretty sure they'd sell. They already have a process to "decommission" a temple in order to have workers remodel it, etc. I'm sure they'll just say a few special words and voilà! it will be ready to sell.

And just like Sears the people at the top of the food chain will walk away with the bank. Alas, nothing to be done about that.

However as Sears ascended to a corporate powerhouse and throughout it’s glory years, it paid taxes and was accountable to shareholders.

LDS Inc, not so much.

So how is the new 2 hour block made up? Does SS alternate win PH and RS?

Yes. SS and PH/RS meet on alternate weeks.

I think it's been rolled out so that TSCC can blame whacky doctrine on families.

"No, Timmy, you must have learned you get your own planet from your delusional mom."
