Not sure what to think about this story. Seems a bit too much of coincidence.
Quite a bit of difference with the story of Bronze Age Oetzi the Iceman, who died on a mountain pass in Italy, DNA testing found living DNA relatives in the villages in the towns below the pass.
I was a little sleep-deprived when I made my short reply yesterday, but I offered it as a "lesson" on the limits of what the Y-Chromosome can tell us about ancestry.
The subline "It looks like Kennewick Man has direct descendants" appears to borrow from a conclusion of someone who participated in the study.
There is no way to conclude from the data that KM has "direct descendants."
"It's a surprise finding out that by finding out the DNA test I'm kind of a descendant of the Kennewick Man... it's amazing, that surprised me a lot," Javier Sanchez said.
/insert caveat about relying on "popular media" to offer accurate science reporting.
What the data does say is that Javier and KM do have a recent common male ancestor; that's all.
If only the Kennewick Man had deposited a dollar or two into a savings account and let the interest compound for 9,000 years, Mr. Sanchez would be getting quite the inheritance.
Big foot could have interbred with us, if he was closer to a Homo Sapiens Idaltu than us, closer to a Neanderthal or Denisovan. I got my 23andme results and I am all 4 types of Homo Sapiens, Homo Sapiens Idaltu (African, The First Wise Man) 4% Homo Sapiens Denisovan (Asian, Australian & Native American) And 2.8% Neanderthal, (European and Asian/Native American)
There were 15 other sub-species of humans (Homos) we have fossils of and 3 of whom, were also Homo Sspiens, we have mapped DNA, who we coexisted with. Any one of whom is a candidate for Eve. Adam was Homo Sapiens Idaltu, The First Wise Man, Elder. The rest of us are all muts. Of course Idaltu was a mut too. Likely a cross between Homos.
