It seems like the church formerly known as Mormon is trying to become more Christ- and Bible-based and less into extolling ideas contained in their old texts. Doctrines and Covenants falls into the tomes they are trying to downplay currently, yes?

Is a class in Doctrines and Covenants still available at BYU? If so, why?

Has the overall coursework at BYU gotten more "Christian-focused"?

At BYU-I it's still available.... I'm not privileged to know why.

What about The Pearl of Great Price? Do they still teach that at BYU, or are they quietly ignoring it at BYU like they do with the membership at large?

The P of GP is being taught in an adult institute class in Utah County. I know this because a close elderly relative is attending it and thinks it is just a wonderful class. gag

Why don't they teach an advanced temple class where a pre-req is a recommend? At least there they could try and explain that mind-screwing nonsense.

Interesting. I never told people I didn't get it. I might have left earlier if I had gotten that response because if it was supposed to be divine either I was beyond hope or it was a crock of crap. Either way I would have considered leaving.

Not as far as I am aware. You don't hear much about the Book of Abraham or Book of Moses these days, but the rest of the standard works get quoted from regularly. They may have toned it down a little, but it would take a statistical analysis of GC talks to determine if that was true, and if so, how much quoting extra-biblical scripture has been toned down.

The word "Lamanite" has definitely been downplayed.

This topic reminds me of when I was in SS newly joined LDS.

I was still "trying" to learn, and participate, something was written on the Board, I raised my hand and asked:

"Does that mean D&C 128?"

The Sunday School teacher turned on me with fury burning in his eyes and said "D&C is the name of a female gynecological operation. WE say Doctrine and Covenants!"

Needless to say, that was the last question I asked!

That D&C comment reminded me of when I first learned about the church, people would refer to them selves as LDS, I thought they are saying LSD.

What an asshole response, so rude and condescending.

That was a teachable moment that should have helped a new member feel more confident and develop an interest in the class. But blew you off instead.

I heard this a lot from people that went to BYU.

In my neck of the woods we ignored them, pressed on the D and C.

Oh my gosh, really, it is a canned response, to attack the phrase D&C as a female operation?

I could not believe my ears that it was being said to me in Sunday School!

But if that was a learned response from BYU, it explains a lot, how the teacher said it so angrily and quickly in response to my use of D&C!!!

I think I would have called it quits on the faith right then and there, but then again I'm easily offended. ;)

when you are at church, you'd think people would be kinder, but not in mormonism. The temple was horrible. The old ladies were RUDE and nitpicked you to death.

The girl who cuts my hair (well, she is 33--I always say girl) is a temple worker 1 night a week. She said they told them to BE KIND and not be too picky, that a lot of people won't go to the temple because of how rudely they are treated.

Where I live and went to church, we always said D&C. That's ridiculous that he related it to the OB/GYN procedure. YOU WERE IN CHURCH, not in a hospital.

Sometimes there is another side to the story that isn't apparent.

What is the possibility that the Sunday school teacher's wife had recently under gone a D&C procedure and it was to the extent that they wouldn't be able to have anymore kids?

It's a marriage and life crisis that many have faced.

The use of the term D&C just hit a raw nerve at a bad time.

The irony for me is that I'm not against consenting adults of either gender treating eat other as equals combining in whatever configuration for whatever amount of time as long as their children have caring adults to rear them. Tall order in "even" and more especially monogamous situations.

What galls me stems from my experiences with my sister's Mormon polygamy. It is truly an absurd game of stroking the male ego. It is demeaning and unchecked abuse of women as "equals." But then again so is Mormonism.

Aww. Tumwater. You are SO nice, so generous, in giving people the benefit of the doubt. If I am ever in a tight space or have done something wrong, I want you in my corner!

SS Teacher was a handsome, never married Ward member, famous for flirting with then dumping all the gullible single women who came to his class. So he really had no excuse for the hostile comment. :(
