Ward conference today. No Stake President just his first counsellor. Two speakers Bishop and 1st Counsellor. Bishop spoke on doing family research and Counsellor talked about missionary work and talking to people about out religious values. I did not see any other stake leaders attending. I did learn from the counsellor if you are flying on an airplane the floowing line will lead into a great discussion. Ask "Are you a religious person?" This guy told us about his experience this past week using this question and I can tell you now, it was a disaster the answer he got back. Not inspiring.

The combined men and woman 2nd hour was conducted by Stake Relief President. It was all about following the prophet. They tried to make it a discussion but that felt very flat as only same 6 people answered any questions. The questions were about how getting people to talk about their feelings with all the changes and revelations that Russ has announced since he was made head prophet. I guess people were so choked up with emotion they could not speak.I actaully had something I wanted to say They showed a video clip of a widow in old testament times who feed Elijah the prophet and how she was blessed with extra food and water. The question was asked do we see the same situation today when we are asked to do what the prophet has asked. I really wanted to say, "The prophet gave her food and water for following him yet several weeks ago Russ said he gave a guy a Priesthhod blessing and he was not sure it would heal the guy or not. So what is the point you are tring to make? The old testament prophet is better than Russ?"

Bottom line or take away. If we do not start to do what Russ is telling us, we are going to fall away and not be counted worthy. Now that is very depressing. Not to me as I think the world is a great place with great people. But to the Mormons the world is turning into spiritual darkness and only those that follow Russ are going to be okay. And yes, never ever tell anyone you are a Mormon use the whole Church name.

It was just a strange conference. People did not seem happy but maybe that is because I have blinders on.

The circumstances under which I currently live mandate that I continue to attend a least Sacrament meeting. In more than 50 years I have seen 0--0--0 changes in the way the meeting is conducted. In fact one bishop told me recently that they are under continual scrutiny by the stake leaders to assure the continued cow-tow to the wishes of the ecclesiastical heirachy

Ward conference was my least favorite meeting because the bishop would randomly call members from the congregation up to the stand to give an impromptu talk or to bear their testimony. I hated public speaking and was sure my name would be called. I think most of the congregation was terrified of being called to speak. The bishop was a real sadist knowing he had the power to make the members uncomfortable. He had a sinister smile on his face while he scanned the terrified faces of the congregation, taking his time till he announced the next victim.

Why didn't I just stay at home instead of submitting myself to such torture? Why did I feel it was my duty to attend those horrific meetings?

Because the church sends out a rescue posse. That's why.
They develop a list of semi-actives or members that need strengthening or reinforcement and then the SP and his entourage travel with the bishopric to "drop in" on targeted members.

My folks always scheduled a family vacation (about a week) during July. They decided not to attend church after a long drive that lasted into wee-early Sunday morning. About 2pm, about 4 cars arrived at the Goop ranch unannounced. None of the Goops were properly attired to receive the holy order of priesthood pricks. My Dad was not active in the ward at the time so he abandoned the front to watch his football game in the den. That left my Mom (in her gardening shorts) and me to take their pot shots. We basically received a sermon on regular church attendance, keeping the commandments and honoring the Lord's day.
