Unfortunately, the creator of this world, the law-giver in the Old Testament, and savior of all mankind, was unfamiliar with the words "coffee" and "tea" when he dictated Section 89 to Joe. So....he left it to his chosen mouthpieces to figure out wheat he meant when he said "hot drinks."
Spoiler alert: "hot drinks" has nothing to do with the temperature of the beverage.
So words mean whatever the prophet says they mean, not their traditional meaning. Mormon changed its meaning overnight. Why don’t they redefine adultery as secret temple marriage? Oh wait.

in the mid-70's, a FP SM letter was read saying that de-caf coffee was OK;
