"Snakes are sneaky. In their 150 million-odd years on this planet, they’ve managed to slither their way into most corners of the world. But Saint Patrick can’t take credit for eliminating our scaly friends from any of them.

Ireland, like pretty much all places without native snakes, never had them to begin with. Some regions are simply too frigid for them. As cold-blooded ectotherms, they rely on their environment to control their body temperature, so few species can live too close to the poles—at least for now.
The common garter snake, Thamnophis sirtalis, can get as far as the southern border of the tundra in North America (though its bodily fluids start to freeze!), but both the Arctic and Antarctic are snake-free.
Similarly, the northernmost bits of Russia, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Canada, and the United States have no native snakes, and the southernmost tip of South America is serpent-less as well. That makes Alaska one of two states to be snake-free, the other being Hawaii. ..."

The operative phrase being "at least for now."

Be good, Dave, or you might find bamboo snakes in your garments.

New Zealand especially on its North Island has a warm temperate climate has no snakes.

Don't know why as being from Australia we have zillions. Even our southern island state of Tasmania which has the same climate as NZ is covered with the bastards.

People have tried to release snakes in Ireland... Also if you know anything about Northern Ireland, there are plenty of snakes in their politics.

Being an island also helps. If the island ever becomes snake-free for whatever reason, it's apparently relatively easy to stay snake-free.

Is there some connections to Mormon with this post? I’m just missing it?

I'm guessing it's to show that Mormons don't have the corner market on pious myths

It's St. Patrick's day, and there is a pious myth that he drove out all the snakes from Ireland.

It's to display the intellectual superiority of the OP, and make him feel better about himself.

That plus he despises Catholics and thinks they should be banned from putting ash on their head by law.

Yes, it could be that was well.

Ok thanks Angela!!! I read the posts here for their connection to LDS unless they say O/T in the head. I guess the OP forgot to put that there so we’d know it has nothing to do with the topic of this Board. :(

I mean not only are there all these pesky evil religious people in the film industry, but it must really trigger you to think it's all an artistic representation of life, and the people in the films are pretending to be someone else.

It was always my understanding that the "snakes" were a reference to Druids/pagans and their practices.

I really dont know anything about Ireland history, but were they driven out, or where they converted by Patrick. I do know he was not Irish, but English

I had always heard (and I fully admit I could be wrong) that they were rather forcefully converted. And if they didn't, they were thrown into the sea. Of course, this is probably mythology much like the rest of the tale.

I imagine it would need to be forceful to convert a snake to a religion. I will bring this IN topic by saying the Mormons would not want converted snakes because they couldn’t pay tithing!

I would not be surprised if the St. Patrick story was a Christianization of an earlier pagan story where some local deity's driving off of the snakes was a story told to explain why there didn't happen to be any snakes in Ireland. The first thing people would notice is the lack of snakes and then they'd make up a story to explain it probably after imbibing a few pints of the ol' Guinness at the local pub

Just so you know as a practicing Catholic and also 1/2 Irish. “Snakes” was symbolic. It was never meant to be taken literally.

We have timber rattlesnakes here, but they supposed to be rare. I haven’t been here in the Summer yet, so we’ll see.
It suppose to be illegal to kill them, but what if you see one in your yard , ready to attack your dog and you have a 45 in the House? Your dog or the snake, scary.
You can compare JS and gang with snakes though and snake oil, to stay on topic
