Steeples are one of 32 similarities shared by 64% of world religions. Yet, no one seems to think that how and why these (today) meaningless forms have evolved from non-existent to imperative to ridiculous.

Recently I asked a very well-educated Mormon neighbor why his church uses steeples. He assured me that there must be an inspired reason. I assured him there was not.

He will return and report what he finds next weekend, when again we will break bread as neighbors who discuss that which will never make the agenda of Executive meetings during the next century.

Such is the power of the status quo.

Now, as you drive throughout the nation, and view the top-most part of any church facility, you will begin to realize that there should be a discussion about steeples.

It's 2019, folks. Let us do what makes sense and discard every inspired bias of the past. I beg of you.

Aren't they supposed to:

-Symbolize reaching to heaven
-Add visibility (height) so that it can be seen and kept in the minds of the community
-Lightening rod (?) (Half joking)
-Sign that everyone can recognize as a church

-Keeps manufactured steeple-makers in business :-)

-Hey, not everyone has the resources to build giant cathedrals nowadays

I was in a 3rd world county, on an island actually, eating brunch. I looked across the way and said damn that looks like a Mormon fiberglass steeple.

After eating, I wandered over and in deed it was the church with no name.

I chatted with the missionaries for a minute and then headed out.

And here I thought all churches with steeples were inspired, built ahead of its time as wi-fi towers.

Hahaha. Kind of like how they "left room" for elevators in the temples before they were invented.

Wow, a Steeple thread(!)

But remember, Christ's gospel is The Same, YESTERDAY, TODAY, & FOREVER...

First some ('modern') MORMON chapels had 'spires' which supposedly drew one's attention upward ... supposedly again towards "heaven" (jk!)

next some cheaply built fibreglass steeples were added but leaked & cracked / broke easily (follow the money);

Now an RfM thread... Full Circle, you say?

har en flott dag, alle!

Those are not steeples. They are dirigible docking towers so that mormons can fly back to missouri.

Imagination plus..."dirigible docking towers so that mormons can fly back to missouri".

But the angels that lurk and fly around the steeples will be allowed to board first.

Probably a long-forgotten throwback to the columns of ancient Egypt, which were phallic symbols.
The obelisk was piercing the sky (Nut )

Apparently, the Egyptians had intercourse with the female sitting on the male.
At least that is what is indicated in some of their writings.

I remember one (+?) chapels with a spire; have they been removed from most LDS buildings now?

I 'spire to be steeped in people.
In people do I 'spire to be steeped.
I want to build the people's steeple;
But sheep'll be my steeple's people.
Wooly bully God, thy wool be done.

I wish I had a picture of one of those spires; they were a single 'monument' type structure, about 5 meters tall with three vertical elements that seemed to be stainless steel(?).

Anyone?

I saw these spires/steeples in person about 40 years ago.

It's because Mo, Inc. is trying to brand their church as "Christian" and appeal to people from that background.
