I wonder how the decision making process works in the church leadership regarding these "revelations". Is it 100% Nelson and the approval by the rest is just a formality or do they have heated debates ? Could there be at some point a counter revolution or a break off from the church initiated by extreme hardliners while declaring Nelson senile and insane ? There are many entertaining scenarios going forward. The church leaders have a real problem on their hands. It's like walking in a minefield. Any step they take, whatever the direction, blows right up in their face.

Being the only church with a living mouthpiece of God probably worked better when they all lived out in the desert separately and remotely. You need to be able to control the message totally so you don't have to contend with conflicting messages coming in and messin' with "God's word" all the time.

Nelson is the president of the corporate sole and as such, it is his legal right granted by the state of Utah, to make whatever changes to church policy he wants to make. The articles of incorporation that outline his powers over the church, are probably on record and available on Utah's corporation commission web-site. But it may take a lawyer to interpret them. I have wondered occasionally what would happen to the church if he became insane enough to make extreme changes to the church while staying sane enough to appear to be normal in the eyes of the law.

The president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, even Russell M. Nelson, carefully (and prayerfully) considers each proposed change before presenting the idea to the other members of the First Presidency. They all seek divine guidance, and if all are in agreement, they present the proposal to the Quorum of the Twelve. Before any changes are approved, all fifteen prophets, seers, and revelators must agree that the change is the literal will of God.
