Is it true people generally fear God more than what God's servants do?

To them and their children?

My parents fear the repercussions of their society more than what their Mormon social circles did to us.

I think it is a strong argument against believing in God to think that a strong belief in God will expose you and yours to abuses, lying, cheating, and stealing from you not to mention what children deal with in some societies of God-fearing folks.
