As a child, I remember seeing the D&RG narrow gauge going over Cumberas Pass between Antonito and Durango CO. This was when it was a working train rather than the tourist attraction now.

Bet the greeners have a hard time accepting the trains smoke and ash these machines bellowed.

I was bothered by the 'spare tire' at the rear.

The "spare tire" is currently present because the steam loco is undergoing trials and might be expected to have a breakdown.

The long-term situation is more interesting: the Big Boy is not equipped with PTC, and may always require a modern diesel loco (PTC-equipped) present in the train. Or it may not:

"Meanwhile, a notice published in the federal register Thursday shows that UP has asked the Federal Railroad Administration for waivers on Positive Train Control compliance for steam locomotives Nos. 844, 4014, and Challenger 4-6-6-4 No. 3985, which is stored out of service in Cheyenne."

YES! People were pissed when they cut the rods on the move out of Pomona, but here she is, under steam and lookin' good. Not as pretty as 4449 but there's more power in 4014 than all the mormon god(s) combined.... :-)

Pure nostalgia! This brings back so many memories!

Thank you for this link. I've been looking forward to this!

My older brother was a steam buff, and a model railroader. After his mission, he carved out of wood, by hand, a model of the Big Boy. It took him several months, and I think it was therapy, to help him recover from his mission. We grew up a mile from the commuter train station, and we used to ride our bicycles there, to watch the steam engines huff and chuff in and out. We were disappointed when diesel took over--trains were never the same, after that.

Fantastic! There's one at Steamtown here in PA, but it's static. Might have to make a trip out to Utah.

The whistle sounded pretty sorry when they put it back on. They blew the hell out of it and it started to sound better and better. Nothing blows the crud out and cleans better than 300 PSI of hot steam!
