Forget the search for Bigfoot, the Indian army claims to have spotted footprints belonging to another elusive beast — the Yeti — and social media is going ape.

“For the first time, an #IndianArmy Moutaineering Expedition Team has sited Mysterious Footprints of mythical beast ‘Yeti,'” the army’s official account tweeted to its nearly 6 million followers.

“This elusive snowman has only been sighted at Makalu-Barun National Park in the past,” the army added along with images of what it claimed were tracks from the mythical Himalayan monster also known as the Abominable Snowman.

The prints, which allegedly measured 32 by 15 inches, were found April 9 near the Makalu Base Camp, a remote mountainous area between Nepal and Tibet, according to the tweet, which had been shared more than 6,000 times as of early Tuesday.

Although the prints were discovered three weeks ago, the army made the discovery public only after deciding that it matched earlier theories about the ape-like creature, according to the Times of India.

“So, we thought it prudent (to go public) to excite scientific temper and rekindle the interest,” the army said.

The message sparked a flurry of responses on social media, where users mocked it as mere monkey business.

It may be the last creature on Earth that can still be taught the doctrine.

If yetis, sasquatches and the like are some type of hominid or primate, they would probably act like hominids or primates. For example, they'd probably move about in family groups. There wouldn't be just adult sized footprints, there would be clusters. Okay, so individuals would have reasons for being out alone, but we should still be finding evidence of groups. And lots of scat.

Not to mention sustainable breeding population. This is why sasquatch stories fall apart.

That's what you get when you cross Neanderthals and Denisovans.

Wait--wrong thread.

"Wait - wrong thread"

This is the thread where you tell us people who haven't set foot in Africa for tens of thousands of years, or even the best part of a million years, are actually African. Which is ironic, since actual Africans such as Elon Musk and Trevor Noah get co-opted as American all the time. You only have to live in the US a couple of years, and you're suddenly "a Merkin".

And don't forget that old canard that there is supposedly no scientific difference between people from all over the world, despite the fact that those very imaginary differences are used by the police and archeologists all the time to determine what murder victims and other degraded cadavers once looked like.

People I've spoken to in Nepal are quite often convinced it exists. Yeti are marginally more likely to exist than bigfoot, although as someone pointed out, local bears are the best explanation for yeti stories.

Contrary to western stereotypes, in the Himalayas themselves, yeti are said to live mostly in the forests and groves below the snowline, and only occasionally venture above it to migrate to other areas. The weirdest piece of Nepalese folklore I've heard is that lady yetis are so saggy they have to throw their breasts over their shoulders to run downhill!

There are actually several types of yeti in their folklore, and they vary in size and description. Needless to say, I find it more plausible that a primate the size of a ten year old child could hide out in the wastes, than, say, a ten foot high monster. Some of the descriptions are more like an orang utan than bigfoot, some more like a bear, which are both interesting.

Sadly, the Indian Army report is indicative of a more worrying trend. Militarization of the Himalayas. The Chinese and Pakistanis are also responsible. This can only be bad for local wildlife, real or imaginary.
