What do you think of the symbol chosen by a government graveyard committee for military Mormon dead?

S'posed to be Moroni! Looks to me like a planet of the apes type blowing a truncated plastic whistle.

Gummint work.

"Certify that the proposed new emblem of belief represents the decedent's religious affiliation or sincerely held religious belief system, or a sincerely held belief system that was functionally equivalent to a religious belief system in the life of the decedent." ... there you have it. you can pick any card you want but you cannot refuse to play the game.

Is there a link you could provide for all of the symbols?

I am interested in the scope of the included religions.

I would imagine:
Cross
Star of David
Crescent
Wheel
that Sikh symbol
Torii
Eagle
Magic wand
Inverted pentagram
Spaghetti & meatballs
Virgin being sacrificed

Thank you, sbg!

This is an absolutely fascinating panorama of American religious/"lack of religious" beliefs--some of which I have never encountered before (and I will be looking them up today!).

This is an invaluable list for understanding the amazing span we (Americans) "are" as a nation of individual citizens.

Thank you so much for looking this up and posting it here!

Thank you!!

I notice the emblem list includes Moonies and Eckanar but not Scientology. Also don't know why every flavor of Christianity needs its own logo.

Goes to show Mormonism is in a league all its own. Neither Christian or anything else.

Someone needs to tell the VA that Rusty banned the word Mormon, it is on the list of more symbols than I though possible for grave markers.

I like your handle but I would use "MormdePlume." Love that.

I'm wondering which one would make the coolest tattoo?

If you're a Star Trek fan do you use the Kohen "Spock" hands, or is that jazz hands for musical theater people? :-)

Yeah, the one on my dad's grave is hideous from the pics I've seen. But it will go when we bury my mom there since they'll have to re-do the stone to add her name, rank and birth/death. There will be no room for vuvuzela-blowing Roddy McDowall.

Not necessarily, my Mom's information is on the back of my Dad's headstone, so nothing changed on his side. It is one headstone per grave in a National Cemetery, at least at Fort Snelling.

The Utah veterans cemetery is not a national cemetery, it’s a state thing out in Bluffdale overlooking some ugly equipment yard from what I understand. It looks like the stone was set into the ground. If they won’t add her it will be a good reason to bury her somewhere nice.
