Because I am a responsible member of RfM (and thus get the Responsible freakin' Member discount) I did not hijack Cheryl's very interesting RfM thread.

But as my title suggests, I was prompted to start this brand new, non-intrusive thread by this comment:

> "You must sacrifice yourself for me."
> Second biggest lie in the book.

But does this mean the BIGGEST lie in terms of the enormity of the deceit, or does it mean the biggest lie in terms of repetitions?

Or is it the lie on the graph where the two lines intersect?

There! Was that good for you?

Simplistic serf that I am, I'm going with the most popular lie, "I didn't do it!"

Ah yes, that brings to mind one of the Dawg's many past jobs. . .

Here he reprises one of the great moral principles in religion. God has said it many times, his servants the prophets repeat it ad nauseam, and it is a typical refrain among local leaders. One might say it is the key to membership in an organization that claims to adhere to a higher law.

Well, I don't like the lie--but you did a good job of finding the biggest lie.

“This is that,” that is the biggest lie.

But without it, we couldn’t say anything at all.

Maybe "God" is the biggest lie in Mormonism.
The second biggest lie is that Mormons can speak and judge for God.

This is the basis for all the other Mormon lies, invented to instill fear and hatred and self-loathing, and to force obedience and to get money out of you such as:

"God will punish you!"

You will fail financially if you do not pay tithing,
You will not be with your family in the hereafter, unless you are sealed in the temple (and pay tithing to get there).
You will become sick, if you break the WOW.

"You are unworthy." is the third biggest lie, IMO.
Already, you are set up to fail, because nobody can be perfect.

Biggest lie: "I know the church is true".
Second biggest lie: "beyond a shadow of a doubt".

This colors all of our perceptions. We see our 'shadow' outside of us, so that we can feel innocent and right while others are guilty and wrong (and merit blame, contempt, punishment, sacrifice). And our live would be better if we could change those outside things which are so annoying, irritating, or hurtful.

In addition, as part of this projection, we imagine a "God" who perceives us the same way as we see others (sinful) and us as meriting the same as we would deal out.

"You are nothing."

"Believe me, and to be perfectly honest" have always been red flags to me.

Also when someone says, "Not to hurt anyone's feelings..." or "not to gossip..." or "Not to be critical..." you know that they are going to proceed to do exactly that. Like, do they think they can neutralize or back-pedal their comment in advance?

Some of the most repeated lies:

"I'm okay. You?"

"I don't want the last (unit of food. Ex: 'slice of pizza' )."

"No, you don't look fat."

"I know what I'm doing!"

"Don't worry about it."

Biggest deception: "You will have a happier/more productive life/afterlife if you do exactly as I tell you."

I will never...(hurt you, leave you, give up on you, cheat you, lie to you, leave you, stop loving you, etc).

Any one who says "I will never (do whatever)" is lying. They will do it, someday. It's guaranteed - the word never has some sort of bad voodoo in it when used in this context. I've experienced it myself, I'm sorry to say.

Uttered in many ways and believed by too many - that we need someone to lead us and tell us what to do. It undermines human integrity and removes our ability to function for ourselves and learn to rely on each other. It also makes us all too easy to control.

In other words, does being naive or ignorant make you a liar? Because I think we all fall into that category. Probably all currently known "facts" will eventually be shown to be untrue, either in principle or partiality.

Yes, often a fatuous statement, as if "reason" is always within the scope of our thinking, or calls upon faith to trust divine reason. But the saying comes from Aristotle and is the basis of empirical science.
