What’s more gross is what he was probably going to do with those photos. Sexual repression does weird things to people.

Oh God, that's just weird. He "directed her" to a dressing room as if he were an employee. Then apparently held his phone up above the wall, as if she wouldn't notice. What a nasty-ass Mormon..moron. His poor wife. He obviously is a very trouble Stake President or whatever, but then again, most of them are, e.g. Larry Craig.

These guys are just doing what Joseph Smith would have done, and he would be so proud of them.

https://fox13now.com/2019/08/16/utah-man-arrested-on-suspicion-of-voyeurism-in-nashville-mall-fitting-room/

Murdock is identified as an ex-bishop and current high councilor who lives in Holladay, Utah.

After making all that clear, the article notes that the LDS spokesman "would not confirm or deny [Murdock's] involvement with the church." I'm sure that will diminish the ill effects of Murdock's behavior on the church's reputation.

Thanks, Fox!

I also see a couple of other possible themes.

The first is that the repression of natural sexuality produces perversions both for the husband and for the wife, who is obviously used to what he was doing. Perhaps it is a fantasy they share, one that they have acted out before. But as you note, the prospect of his talking to children about their sexuality is deeply unsettling.

The other is the very real possibility that they viewed the victim as less important than they. In short, they would probably never have done something like that to someone they knew was Mormon. Perhaps they view the world as divided into "we," who are members of the church and must be treated with respect; and "they," who can be used for amusement.

I hope that isn't true, but we've seen the religious class system before: Christians versus Jews, Christians versus pagans, Catholics versus Protestants, priests versus children, Mormons versus non-Mormons, members of the core families versus kids from less prestigious families. It would be the old pattern of dehumanizing others so that they can be mistreated without guilt.

That scenario--Murdoch and his wife using another person, an outsider or alien, for their pleasure--makes me uncomfortable. I hope the interpretation is incorrect. But it surely sounds like this isn't Bishop and Sister Murdock's first rodeo.

That young lady was amazing as she darted into the next dressing room immediately, slapped the phone out of his hand so that he could not erase the pic's, and then pick it up and ran with it. Wow, just unbelievable.

So two great observations you've made here. I think you're right that it probably not their first rodeo. You obviously noticed how the wife begged them not to call the police. This is not a normal reaction of a spouse just finding out, but one of whom was used to this. Otherwise, she would have been in a state of confusion. Also, he/they were getting complacent, probably because they had been successful before, the "I will be a God" superiority complex, and they were in South where they felt very superior over their victims. Yep, Mormonism breeds some very strange perversions. I wonder if the tag team will both be prosecuted. Depends on what is on the phone(s). They should check her phone too.

The fact that you 'see' what you IMAGINE is going on in private lives is SICK.

Think about that.

You are IMAGINING a hypothetical 'fantasy' and have already projected yourself into the wife's 'used to it' position. How messed up is that?

Get right with yourself. Deal with your own perverse, disgusting imaginary world where you claim to 'see' what is going on in others' sexual lives.

SICK.

Unless you have information we don't, Ms Lot, your speculations about Mrs. Murdock strike me as highly speculative, that she might have participated in other such marital practices with Mr. Murdock in the past?

Mr. Occam suggests to me something much simpler, but certainly not benign: she was shopping with Mr. Murdock, who--far from home--attempted a very sleazy (and inept) act of digital voyeurism. He might have engaged in this in the past, who knows? Not only did he (1) get caught, but (2) he met his match in a fast-acting, assertive woman(!!).

Now the situation goes very south, very quickly, and Mrs. Murdock, powerfully conditioned to sustain and protect her penisholder, attempts to intercede with the victim on his behalf. Obviously, she failed--she could be charged with witness tampering or obstruction. We don't know the timeline, but I'll guess that the victim created enough of a disturbance to attract Mrs. Murdock, who did what she could to defuse the situation before (and perhaps while) the police arrived.

The question for Mrs. Murdock is: "If YOU were in that dressing room, and some creep was attempting an image or video of you, would you want HIS wife protecting him?"

Last thought: Assuming the camera was seized as evidence, I wonder what else might be in it? Mr. Murdock's woes might be just beginning.

Edit: Very Last Thought: a compatriot of mine once arrested a creep who had (very crudely) affixed a video camera to the toe of his shoe, and was taking upskirt images of women in a supermarket.

I think I labelled my suggestion as speculation, caffiend. So it could be off the mark.

But I think it reasonable to assert that a normal Mormon woman would never expect anything like what happened. If she discovered a dirty picture on her husband's computer, a typical Mormon woman would be devastated, reduced to tears, unable to function; after she regained her composure, she would confront her husband and very possibly call her bishop.

What we are dealing with here is even more extreme. Murdock was not only obtaining his own "porn," he was doing it in public and in her presence. It is difficult to imagine a starker and more humiliating episode. A typical Mormon woman would be stunned if she encountered a crazed woman exiting the dressing room and assaulting her husband. Yet in this case Sister Murdock kept her cool, evinced no surprise at the accusations--she tacitly acknowledged them--and tried to reason with the victim in defense of her husband. There is no indication that she was at all discomfited.

Others here can opine, but I submit that if Occam were familiar with how Mormon women perceive the world, their husbands, etc., such a quick and calm reaction--patiently offering a deal to buy the victim's silence--he would find it highly significant. To switch metaphors, this is closer to the case of the dog that did not bark. Mrs. Murdock behaved radically differently than most women, and especially Mormon women, would have done.

Yes, I am indeed speculating. But the way she behaved was, in these circumstances, bizarre. I invite others to express their views as to whether my speculation is warranted given Mormon values and expectations.

He's 55 years old?!! -- old enough to know better. I can't believe that he directed her into a particular dressing room. The victim had great presence of mind to slap the phone out of his hands and run with it.

My question is, do people in their 50s really shop at H&M? It strikes me as being a store for younger people.

Well, exactly.... It doesn't sound like the friendly high councilman was there for the shopping experience. He was apparently there to scope out (and photograph) the shoppers....

the Word of Wisdom was supposed to prevent such things from happening. But this guy was identified as a "high member" of the LDS Church.

What's next? High priests sitting at the bottom of escalators, like Beavis and Butthead, taking photos of women in billowy skirts as they go by?

The church needs to keep them busier with things like scrubbing toilets at the stake center or picking up garbage on the highway so that they don't have time to get high and do pervy stuff. The two-hour meeting block and deletions of all the fun stuff in the temple have resulted in a bunch of old Mormon guys struggling to find thrills in other, less-wholesome, pursuits.

Ah, the days of the old West: "We'll give 'em a fair trial. Then hang 'im."

But you're right, folks.Aside from widely loathed politicians, everybody is entitled to the presumption of innocence.

The presumption of innocence is appropriate for legal proceedings but not necessarily for life in general. No one is under any obligation to extend the presumption of innocence to Harvey Weinstein, Jeffery Epstein, profoundly unethical politicians of any stripe, or Adolf Hitler.

Spot on, EOD! It's almost straight from a song we sang in one of those Primary sacrament meeting programs. I think it was called "The things I Do."

I am much to young to go abroad
To teach and preach the word of God
But I can show I know it's true
Quite simply by the things I do.

The stranger in my neighborhood
Will judge the gospel bad or good
By how I act at work or play [or shopping]
And not just on the Sabbath day.

I'll take my friend to church with me,
Where I will act with dignity.
My reverence and my smiling face
Will show him it's a sacred place.

In everything I do, he'll see
I am what I profess to be.
Then when the elders find his door,
He'll say, "Come in and tell me more."

Those were the words when I learned them. I think they're slightly different now, but the point remains. Anything at all that the guy's son may have accomplished in the way of P.R. for the church was undone with one click of his cell phone camera. Nice work, Brother Murdock!

My thoughts as well.

In a way this young man has to deaL with a double-whammy. Dad was caught in the act and his mom looks foolish trying to deflect his guilt.

...and then something about falling harder and farther.

Of course the only thing "high" about this "High Councilman" was the elevation of his smartphone as he tried to get some illicit photos of a lady undressing.

The Mormons love giving out titles with the word "high" in them. Ego stroking for nobodies who want to think they're somebody.

There is no "Low Council" or "Middle Council".

The Mormon "High Council" is like a "tall" beverage at Starbucks, which also doubles as the shortest beverage at Starbucks.

The High Council is for guys who think they deserve some status and recognition but are actually too busy with their careers to take on something in the church that is really time-consuming. They pay their tithing and usually are guys who are earning good money, so they get the title "High Councilman" and visit different wards on Sundays and are invited to sit on the stand to be admired by the congregation as a special dignitary of some sort. And since they don't have to do really time-consuming things in church, they have time to go to shopping malls and take sneaky photos of ladies taking their clothes off in changing booths.

Some nice reporting by FOX news...

"People who live in Murdock’s neighborhood were very quick to stand up for him, describing him as a great man with a beautiful family.

"Neighbors confirmed Murdock used to be a bishop at his ward in Holladay before serving on his stake’s high council.

"One man, who asked to remain anonymous, said he just listened to Murdock’s speak at his ward a couple months ago.

"“I enjoyed his talk, thought he seemed dynamic and personable,” the man said. “I do feel really bad for his family and hope that they can all recover from this, but I was pretty disappointed... I would guess that he’ll be released.

It was a variant of Tourette's syndrome. In this variant, the sufferer uncontrollably begins taking photos of people undressing in changing rooms. They can't help it because the movements of their arms and hands are controlled by a part of their brain that they're conscious mind cannot access.

No doubt, the whole time this was going on, Brother Murdock was just as shocked and horrified as the lady in the changing room.

In the old days, people would have seen it as a case of "demonic possession". But in our enlightened age, we correctly see it as a medical condition that, when properly diagnosed, can be controlled with appropriate medication.

Brother Murdock needs our support and sympathy, not condemnation. The good news is that he has now been properly diagnosed and has been prescribed appropriate treatments. This has been a faith-building and educational experience for all involved. Members of his home stake can look forward to him resuming the performance of his High Councilman duties in the near future. But his devoted wife will keep his smart phone in his purse.... [cue polite laughter from the Mormon audience].

+++++

How am I doing? I still want to get a cushy job in the public relations division at the COB. With the script above, all they need to do is get a somewhat reputable mental health professional to back the "quasi-Tourettes" excuse...and then everything will be okay.
