NEVER ADMIT that ChurchCo made a / any mistake(s)!
If you admit a mistake, people (members!) will inquire as to (GASP!) Correcting Them! You KNOW we don't do that !!!!
If anyone refers you to D. Uchtdorfs statement (October 2013 GC) that (paraphrase) sometimes mistakes have been made that aren't consistent with church values/principles;
Say his statement was:
- taken out of context
- has since been retracted
- Wasn't approved beforehand, he was 'speaking as a man'
but always couched in wording that suggests that the mistake was innocent, honest and understandable, given that the leaders are, after all, human. Called of god? Yes. Inspired? Yes. But sometimes allowed to make little mistakes here and there because they have not yet reached a state of perfect knowledge.
So, IIRC, Bruce McConkie once stated that Brigham Young made a mistake when he preached that Adam was our God. But BRM couched it in wording that made it seem like "just one of those things"... You know, as in "nothing to see here, folks, just move along." It's not like it's particularly important for THE PROPHET to actually know God from Adam. As mistakes go, it's basically the same as getting the names of your 3rd and 4th grade elementary school teachers mixed up.
But what is absolutely prohibited is any notion that an ordinary sheep-level member could ever be more correct than a General Authority about anything.
