Pornography is too easy to find on the internet. Not only that, people are naturally curious, and they want to satisfy their curiosity about something so prevalent.

It may appeal to curiosity more than to sexual titillation. Cartoons, amateur, listings of famous porn stars, just the sheer amount of choices available.

It's so central to society now that not understanding it is like not reading the news.

It helps to know what your kids are looking at, so you can relate to them.

It might be better to "manage" pornography. You don't need to avoid it entirely, you just need to not let it affect you in ways you don't want.

You can also view it briefly, and not watch it too long or dwell on it.

Mormons face almost certain peril. They will constantly be reminded of and shamed over porn. Now is not a good time to be a Mormon.

My Boss was standing at my desk and I pulled up YouTube which has pop up videos. One of them was of a scantily clad muscular couple of body builders. I didn't think anything of it and clicked on the video I was looking for to show my Boss. Afterwards he said he wanted to talk to me. He said, "Man, when you were showing me that video on Youtube there was a video the popped up that was really inappropriate, especially for the younger interns."
I said, "Oh, yeah, well, you can't really control what pops up on Youtube unfortunately."
He said, "Yeah, well, I just try to stay as far away as possible from that kind of thing!"
I said, "I get it. It's hard to avoid these days."

I just don't get how we became so afraid of the human body and treat it like it's a sin to just see a couple of body builders in bathing suits when it's nothing more than we see on the beach. Somehow in all of our piety we made the human body sinful to look at. It's a perverted world view.

I very much agree. In the ensign this month there are 3 articles just on porn. Mormons are obsessed with this stuff. I looked at the first article https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/ensign/2019/10/addressing-pornography-protect-respond-and-heal?lang=eng

is About children viewing porn and how horrifying and scarring that is. My reply is that kids need to develop a little backbone. They are going to hear their friends joke about things, and they are going to see bodies sometime. This over emphasis on hating the body is actually shaming kids to think their bodies are dirty, and nasty. That they are evil little pathetic demons.

Never mind the fact that mormondoms founder was a ladies man who really liked teenage girls and did who knows what with his step daughters? This is what todays children should really be horrified at!

Then there is an article about young dating couples who like porn and how <<bad>> that is. It's all too much to take.

“This over emphasis on hating the body is actually shaming kids to think their bodies are dirty, and nasty.“

That seems to be the real problem. The “actors” and models used in porn look the way we would like to look but are too lazy to get that way. If you’re frumpy, a couple of hardbodies going at it will make you uncomfortable. Usually it’s like a gym workout. You’d have to be in shape to do what they do. More guilt, you should be working out.

I think the Ensign articles will cause more porn consumption in a state that already tops the nation. More “will power” will make the “wayward” Mormons change their behavior? Because it hasn’t so far. Mormons always think that doubling down on what doesn’t work will be the magic that turns things around. Why is that? Magical thinking? Indoctrinated thinking? Certainly not critical thinking.

The church could just stop discussing all things sexual. That would solve so many problems. Just teach healthy relationships. Normal people really don’t care about one another’s sexual habits. Okay, I’m assuming I’m normal. But then Mormons would have to have healthy boundaries.

Which leads to another question. For a people without personal boundaries, wouldn’t porn be normal and boring to watch? If Rusty said “Watch all you want”, they would lose their taste for it.

Blame God for porn. He invented it, and made it spread to the current levels. This so called God had the choice to not make it a part of human society. Pathetic.

This reminds me when I was 8yrs old. The neighbors had 3 kids around my age and we would sled, build forts, and just have a good time together. Well one of the kids was a boy my age and one day we were just sitting in the garage trying to decide to get the neighborhood together and play baseball or not. He goes to a box and pulls out a magazine called Playboy and starts flipping through the pages and spreads out the centerfold. He says,I remember the exact words, "this is what you are going to look like when you are older". I started screaming and ran home still screaming. My mom finally got it out of me what happened. You know that scene in Christmas Story when the mom called the other mom and you could hear the kid screaming on the other end of the phone? Pretty much what happened. Anyway, we saw each other some years later and we still laugh at that.
Kids are going to be exposed to a lot. Even in my uber Mormon days, I gave my kids their space and never threatened. It was so important to me they had a healthy perception of women and relationships. So far so good.

To protect the sacred innocence of my children, I told them that women don't really have breasts. That's something Hugh Hefner made up to sell magazines. I figured the way my wife kept our home clear of "objectionable" publications, the kids would discover the truth about Santa Claus before boobies.

There is nothing wrong with pornography. If you can control a person's sexuality, you can control them. Pornography interferes with the church's ability to control people. A lot of the things that people say are wrong with pornography aren't about pornography. If anyone is really being exploited in some pornograpic materials, it's not the pornography that is wrong, it's the exploitation that is wrong. If women are really being disrespected, it is the disrespect that is wrong. If some religious nut sees it and can't handle it, they are free to not look at it. Should we ban certain religious beliefs because they offend some of us? Like alcohol, just be responsible to not make it available to children.

The more the church tries to control people in to sexless or sex-repressed lives, the more they will use pornography to try to un-repress themselves. The problem isn't the pornography, it's the sexual repression. If the sexual repression is pervasive, then so the pornography will be pervasive also. People need to learn to have boundaries and to respect the boundaries of others. Mormonism does a terrible job of that. Typically, shame wins and the shame paradigm is the only language that can be used to talk about pornography. The church leaders fuel this paradigm. This is unhealthy.

I watch porn maybe once a month. Some old movies from the 80s I sneek-peeked at when I was a kid. The guys got Miami Vice mullets and muscle-toned bodies. The ladies look like Barbies with Silicon-boobs. The dialogue is academy award-class. Hilarious.
