Outside of what my family did to me, I received no punishment or setbacks for rejecting the religion. I had the usual balance of blessings and curses most folks enjoy. I've lived through seven decades, and that's plenty. The only way for me to be punished now is in the imaginary afterlife. That's really weak. I've seen dead people. They aren't there, only a shell. What peace, just knowing that, since nothing remains, Mormonism is sure the hell out.

"Outside of what my family did to me".
That's like outside of the Third Reich, Germany was an OK place to live in the 1930's.

You do not get to leave with your dignity intact.

This is true, and I can thank my family for that.

I got cancer because I left.
(At least according to some)
I better put those garments back on before I'm destined to hell.

What does that say about active mormons who get cancer? I know several who have it. How do they rationalize it?

Just getting some challenges that they need to learn from. Be it humility, kindness, patience, etc. God really loves them and they're special to receive the challenges.

I remember when my children were young and I was teaching them “life lessons”. Nothing said “You’re special” or “I love you” more than those life-threatening challenges I gave them.

Mormonism: making schadenfreude a gift of the spirit since 1830.
