When I was a young woman (not yet married, but engaged), I worked at a Dime Store, in it's basement level.

Although some of you are too young to know there ever was any such store, at one time it was very much in demand.

Well, a middle-aged over-weight woman came in and started to "shop", while in reality she was putting mercandice inside her loose, black, below-the-knee coat. A contemporary girl and I both noticed her and noded our heads in agreement. However, it was a store policy to leave such persons alone (as it was not worth worring about in those days, as such costs were obsorbed into the store's budget.

As I had passed the math test (very surprised by this), I was assigned to work in an area where I had to figure out how much roll-off kitchen table 'cloth' would cost (for instance, like 1 & 3/4th yard).

Well, the man who wanted to marry me (and eventually did), came in to order some of this cloth--but I had no idea how much it would cost. So, being the clever young woman I was, I asked him to figure it out for me while I helped another person--which, innocently, he did.

And that's the funny fact.

Aww! At least the highest value item in the store went to the worthy thief. :-)

We had a five and dime store near my home as a kid. Strange to think they started by having a 5 cent table and a 10 cent table to choose from for merchandise.

A nickle or dime doesn't get you much these days.....just change jar food now.

When I was living in NYC during the 80s they still had at least one Woolworth's store. Not having a lot of money back then, my idea of a good time was cruising the kitchen gadgets section. I had the best equipped kitchen!

I once saw Audrey Hepburn shoplift.

More than once, actually.

Presumably in your days as a Marlowesque private investigator? Dirty job, tailing Miss Hepburn, but someone had to do it...
