On Nov. 21, a week before Thanksgiving, the woman was filling in at the school and asked students: “What are you thankful for this year?”

An 11-year-old boy in the class responded, “I’m thankful that I’m finally going to be adopted by my two dads.”

Students later said that the substitute snapped, “Why on earth would you be happy about that?” And for the next 10 minutes she lectured the 30 kids about her own views, how “homosexuality is wrong” and “two men living together is a sin.” She looked at the boy, too, and told him: “That’s nothing to be thankful for.”

She was escorted out of the school after three girls walked out of the room and told the principal.

The woman was a "substitute teacher" contracted by Kelly Services. It's possible that she is an actual credentialed teacher, but we've been given no evidence that such is the case. Out of respect for qualified and competent teachers everywhere, it causes me pain to see this woman described as a teacher.

I heard that she is being promoted as a candidate for the plans some of the 12 are fomenting to give 'right-thinking' women the Aaronic priesthood! She definitely has the Right Stuff from their perspective.

My nevermo cousin asked me at lunch if I'd heard about it.

Pay for subs seems to be $60-65 per day on call; school day starts 7AM, ends about 3PM, not including staying after to grade papers, etc..., if any. So, about $8 per hour, no benefits, no paid vacation, work sporadically from October through May, just day labor on call, getting rousted out of bed at 4AM to 7AM, and show for babysitting, cold. Read the teacher's day class instructions at the opening bell.

Great way to pay for those student loans and all those teaching psychology soft science classes. You might make $5-7000 a year for eight months.

Substitutes in my local school district receive $152 for a full seven-hour day. Even so, we still have a tough time finding subs. The cost of living is much higher here than in Utah.

I get 110 dollars a day and in secondary school there is very little work involved. Basically I hand out workheets or show a video. It is a good job for a retired teacher who can only earn so much without it affecting Social Security. I can pick where and when I work and I sign up via computer to avoid getting calls at 6 AM. Most subs I know are retired teachers.

We have retired teachers subbing here, but because we are a university town, we also have grad students who sub to earn a few $$ on days when they don't have classes as well as recent grads including those with credentials who haven't yet secured full-time positions.We also have university town hangers-on who have completed degree programs in fields other than teaching yet are not gainfully employed, but don't want to leave the area. If they're reliable in terms of showing up on time when they've been contracted and if they're not wholly incompetent, they can earn enough to survive while waiting around for their big breaks or until facing the reality that they will likely never work in the fields of their training if they remain here. Some of them are actually quite good at subbing and probably should consider full-time teaching as a career.

To the best of my knowledge, California public school teachers who are still around aren't part of Social Security unless they have paid into it through other employment, but they can only earn so much annually from the State of California according to STRS regulations. They can, however, retire after teaching in California with a full pension, then teach in another state's public school system with no constraints except that the IRS will take its fair share.

I find it bizarre that California public school teachers are not a part of the Social Security system. I've always been a part of the SS system, going back to when I was 16 years old and through the entirety of my teaching career. I am also a part of a teachers' pension system.

My pension system, although in good shape, has changed over the years. The teachers who were more experienced when I came on board in the mid-90s were a part of pension system "A," which was really good. Mine is system "B," which is good but not quite as good as "A." The youngest teachers coming on board now are a part of system D or E. Each revision has gotten progressively worse. I did not need to have additional retirement savings (which can be difficult on a teacher's salary,) but looking at the numbers, the youngest teachers will likely need to carry a 403b or Roth IRA as well. I'm not sure that the pension will be enough to convince them to stay in a demanding profession.

In my neck of the woods, burnout is so great that you don't see that many retired teachers subbing any more. Teachers retire and then go off and do other things. A few do go elsewhere to build a pension in another system. They can also do this by gaining employment with a city, state, or Federal agency. In these cases, pensions can often be combined, or (more likely) taken separately.

I don't know why California teachers have not participated in social security.

I have a brother-in-law and sister-in-law who live in the San Joaquin Valley and taught in districts where the teacher pay was near the highest in the state despite the cost of living being relatively low in their area. They were able to pay into tax-sheltered annuities and Roth IRAs, and have a very comfortable retirement income.

The retired teachers I know who substitute usually do so on a very limited basis, usually to fund something they might not otherwise be able to afford. Those who hold special education credentials are valuable, as districts here are penalized for days in which special education classes are covered by teachers who do not hold appropriate authorizations to teach in special education settings.

Stop saying Utard. It not only insults all of us in Utah that are trying to make it a more sophisticated, tolerant, enjoyable place to live and visit, but it marginalizes and stigmatizes many challenged people and their families that struggle with disabilities.

the past 4 generations of my family are from Utah.
If I intended for the common derogutory term, Utard, to mean that I thought Utahns were retarded, I'd be calling myself retarded, since that's my family's heritage, at least part of it.

the 10 minute lecture was her error. It was inapropriate in the environment.
