When this first came to light a few years ago I wasn't really all that shocked that Mormons were the major players. I assumed these Mormons thought it was okay simply because they were Mormons. People representing God can't possibly be wrong, y'know? Add with the whole Nephi killing Laban for the good of everyone thing, suddenly, waterboarding seems kind in comparison?

At least they stopped at rectal feeding and didn't force the victims to listen to General Conference, bring in Bednar for a Fireside, or make them go home teaching.
