Last week SLTrib ran one of those end-of-decade articles profiling the changes that have happened in SL County and in Utah. https://www.sltrib.com/utah-decade-2010s/

"One of the biggest changes is that Utah’s fertility rate dropped below replacement level — and essentially fell off a cliff in the past decade.

“They said it would never happen here,” said Pam Perlich, senior demographer at the University of Utah’s Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute. “No one who knew the old Utah ever expected this to happen — or so quickly.”

The 2018 total fertility rate for Utah — the number of children each woman here would expect to have in her lifetime — has now dropped to 2.03, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. The rate to exactly replace the population over time is 2.1

The new rate is less than half of Utah’s fertility rate of 4.3 back in 1960. It also comes after 11 straight years of decreases since the rate was 2.68 in 2007."


"Another change is that Utahns are waiting longer to get married -- if they marry at all.

The median age for Utah men at their first marriage increased from 29.6 to 31 in the decade, according to Census Bureau estimates. The age for women at their first marriage rose from 26.7 to 28.3."

I found the median age of first marriages to be pretty stunning. I would have guessed something considerably lower than that. I'm sure there are still some RMs and LDS women getting married at 21/19 right after he finishes a mission, but if the median age for men is 31, there can't be too damn many in their early 20s. Ditto for women.

No wonder Rusty and the boys are having heartburn. The only significant growth Mormonism is having in the industrialized countries is birthrate. If they lose that, they are well and truly screwed.

Of course, the $100B can tide them over until they can establish the Republic of Gilead.

One other interesting stat:

In the year 2000, 75% of new residential construction was single family homes. In 2019, for the first time ever, apartment unit construction exceeded single family home construction. S.F.Homes were only 44% of new construction in 2019, and it was significantly above 50% in 2018.

The times, they are a changing.

So Mormonism is doing exactly what is happening throughout the rich world: growing richer, more educated, and less interested in procreation.

That explains a lot, including why the church favors open immigration and is so intent upon welcoming converts in Latin America and Africa. For Mormonism, he future lies not in North America, Europe, or Northeast Asian--unless lots more people with dark skin are allowed to enter those regions.
