This is the very reputable Australian Koala Foundation. Over 8000 koalas have died in the fires. There is also devastating loss of habitat. The fires could bring them to the brink of extinction.

The Gift Shop on the site looks like a way to support the foundation and provide g-kids with tangible reminders of these animals.

Rescued orphaned baby koala

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJO61lyPS1Y

Admin, is there some way we could make an exception, and keep this thread up permanently? This is such a dire situation, as their species is now extremely threatened for extinction. They can live nowhere else in the world, but Australia. Their habitat has been almost completely burned out. They are even having a hard time finding a place for this baby to live.

Here's one of my favorite archived articles about koalas. This one is from 4.5 years ago. Vets at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital near Brisbane operated on a mother koala who had been hit by a car. Her little baby clung to her and refused to leave her as she was being treated for a collapsed lung.

The Australia Zoo was founded by the Irwin family.

According to this article, Zoos Victoria is sending vets into fire zones.

Those articles are very informative. I had no idea that it costs 1500. to 5000.to treat one koala.

Thank you summer.

summer, here is a video I found about the first story you posted. The devotion of the mother koala, even when injured is so touching.

Yes, I love that story. I think it would have been equally stressful for the mom to be away from her baby.

There are various wildlife and rehab organizations around Australia that do great work with injured and orphaned wild animals, in or out of fire season. I particularly love the videos of the orphaned kangaroo joeys that will hop around after their caregivers, and cling to the caregivers' legs wanting to be fed. Unfortunately due to the ongoing fires, there will probably be a large number of orphaned animal babies to care for.

I just came across a small feel-good article about how the Australian navy delivered 100 gallons of beer to a small coastal town that was cut off by the fires.

Sure hope the people they catch (caught) for setting these fires get long sentences.
