The band, Beth, but the name of the band made me read the book (by William S. Burroughs) which is pretty good although rather strange.

:)

So...how freaky is Burroughs, TiP and DB? I don't need nightmares.

I don't like horror and William S. Burroughs is one of my favorite authors. The Western Lands trilogy is really good.

I'm reading a book with the eponymous title, "The Scandinavians." I like it a lot. The author is a British expat, and he describes road trips and people he meets. At one point he mentions he is listening to "The Soft Machine," the band, and I thought, "Ah-ha! I must ask Soft Machine!" So ask I did as evidenced by this thread. :P

Apparently there's a club in Norway, I think it's called the Melancholia Club, of which there were 12 members at the time the book was written, and they sound like a lot of fun. I'm not kidding. Embrace your melancholia, Scandinavians!

In Skellefteå, Föreningen för Mörkrets och Kylans (the Friends of Darkness and the Cold), holds an annual swimming race after they chop through 20" of ice. They promote the virtues of melancholy at an anti-festival called the Melankoliade.

In case you didn't know, Norway is a place. And "Norwegian" should not be used to describe all of the people in Scandinavia. They are not all from Norway. Some are from Sweden and places like that. IKEA is the result of strict Scandinavian Lutheranism that eschews ornament.

Mad King Christian VII allowed a German dude named Struensee to run Denmark (that too is not Norway), for a couple of years. The king wanted more time to wear a mask at night and fight with the police. He thought he was a changeling. He also enjoyed masturbating in public.

Annnywaaaay,

During that time, Struensee had the king sign all sorts of stuff giving Danes complete freedom of speech; the abolition of torture; no more serf type business; a ban on slave trading in Danish colonies; and a complete freedom of the press. He did other stuff, too.

Struensee ended up being beheaded, quartered, castrated, and his body parts were weaved through the spokes of cartwheels that were then put on poles. They did the same to his friend who supposedly bit the king's finger.

Needless to say, the reforms were rolled back.

(not proofreading)
