Bombs and blood feuds: the wave of explosions rocking Sweden’s cities

Incidents involving explosives have risen to crisis levels in a country where the crime rate is low

The first thing Daniel Georén registered was a cacophony of car alarms. It was 2am, and everyone in the attractive cobbled street where he lives in Malmö, Sweden, had been jolted awake by a giant explosion

This is fascinating and I'm tempted to give my oppionion on the naivety of the Swedish politicians, but does this have a connection to mormonism?

The vikings were mostly Norweigens. I have both Swedish and Norweigen lineage. The Swedes and Norweigens often held prejudices against eachother going way back, but often seemed to merry eachother after immigrating to the US, probably because of their common scandinavian similarities when contrasted against the rest of the American melting pot. I don't know if these prejudices go back all the way to the days of the vikings or not.

A childhood friend of mine from a Norweigen family had a senile grandmother in her 90's. One day this grandmother of his blew up at me for no reason and called me a "damned dirty Swede", knowing little more about me than my last name, and I was a child at the time. When I told my parents about this they explained the old ethnic-based animosities to me. I laugh about these differences now because it's the same to me as black people who are prejudice against other black people who have a yet darker or lighter skin than they do, or of asians who have prejudices against other asians based on subtle differences between their races.

I didn't see anything in the article though, that indicates religion or racism. But the skeptical part of me asks if political correctness may not have completely scrubbed any religious or ethnic or racially-related issues that might have existed, out of the article. The Sweden that I know is the one described to me by my grandparents and great uncles, and that was handed down in words to me by my parents, from their extended family. Political correctness didn't exist back then. In one journal of family stories that were handed down and ended up in print, some of my ancestors poked fun at others in their community who were 'proper people who used utincils such as a knife and fork to eat their meals with'. And they were mostly impoverished. The Sweden they described to me existed a hundred years and more ago and was quite different than the one that exists today. I am sure that quite a bit has changed since then.

When I left the church, I still had a scandinavian heritage and a whole side of my family who never wanted anything to do with Mormonism to begin with. I was later pleased to read about Hans Mattsson's disaffection from the mormon church.

It is happening in Malmo. What do you expect? That part of Sweden is the equivalent of going to Baltimore, MD. Just a total war zone.

It's not my favorite city (I find Washington, D.C. far more interesting.) But like any major city, it has its good areas and its bad areas. A tourist would be unlikely to go anywhere but the good areas. There are some interesting museums, a good aquarium, a number of historic ships docked at the harbor, and Fort McHenry (the focus of the Star Spangled Banner.) And it has crab cakes! Yum.

It's many places and it's completely unnatural for a country in peace.

Back during the refugee crisis a few years ago, Sweden had an open door policy, welcoming anyone who claimed to be a victim of the Syrian conflict. No verification, no confirmation, just a welcome mat and instant permanent residence. Now, when fraud has been caught, there is no punishment or recourse. "Oh, you lied about where you are from? Oh well". It is a total shame, Malmo is such a nice city. But over the past couple of years it has gone to shit. Glad I live on the other side of the bridge.

If alsd lives on the other side of the bridge from Malmo, then they live in Denmark which has a universal health care system.

Yep, I live in Denmark.

And I was referring to Malmo specifically, not Sweden in general. Sweden is an awesome country. It is just a shame that Malmo, which is a beautiful city, has gone downhill so much.

Yes this is what I've heard as well. Malmo has some real issues that aren't going to be able to be swept under the rug any time soon. What I"m hearing is that 10% of the country is now immigrants (mostly Muslim) And this has all happened in less than 10 years thanks to the Labor party officials. Now of course I'm sure Muslims are great people and would never think of disrupting the local way of life, but just think about the upshift to the former residents in such a short time. They've got to accomodate to a whole new set of folks who are penniless and don't even know the language. It's not going to be easy to fit in and become Swedes when the cultures are so different.

It would be like if Utah accepted 300,000 refugees from far far away, a population the size of Salt Lake settling in Salt Lake. The far right is on the rise over there.

Rubin did an excellent report on the crisis about what's actually going on.

I have it on very good authority that reports of "no-go zones" in Sweden are nothing except right-wing propaganda. (s/) Reports of gang violence could be Polish, Romulan, wandering Amish, the Kingstons...could be anybody!

How would you explain "no-go zones" in the United States?

Seriously? You don't think there are places in the United States that are as dangerous as Malmo Sweden?

It's hard to imagine you saying that with a straight face.

If you are white there sure as hell are no go areas in Oakland. Years ago I had to go to a week long conference in Oakland and my SF PD friend insisted on taking the time off work to go with me. With his badge and gun. Old SF joke - If you blow a tire on the Bay Bridge ride the rim till you get to Berkeley.

If you are white there are no-go areas in the States; if you are African-American there are no-go areas; if you are Latino there are as well; so too Muslims, and Jews, and gays. The notion that Sweden is more dangerous either generally or in specific places than the United States is uninformed lunacy.

Please note that I did not say there were no dangerous places in Sweden--just in case anyone wants to misconstrue my statement.

I think that the shock of the article isn't that there are dangerous areas in various parts of the world, but that Sweden has gone from being a relatively safe place, to a more violent place within just a few short years. No one is shocked that there are no-go places in the US or some other parts of the world. But what changes what have taken place in Sweden recently to make it go from being reletively safe to less safe?

My initial thought was that perhaps the increase in violance might be a result of the high increase in immigration that has taken place recently. But if the article is correct, it doesn't look like this has anything to do with Sweden's immigrant population. The long-time locals appear to have started feuding amongst themselves. There is some level of innocence to be found in the situation based on the fact that the explosions are being timed to scare people more-so than to kill people (although they are still wielding deadly force and might kill someone). If the violence were a result of religious differences or of significant socio-economic disperaties between unfamiliar populations, the violence might be designed more to maximize the death toll of enemies and to terrorize others who see that the bomb-setters are willing to kill and have actually killed, to get what they want. These bombs have some effect of counting coup with exception that the setting of bombs and sneaking away also has some elements of cowardice. They don't want to take any significant personal risks. They don't necessarily want to kill anyone. Yet they use a weapon that is symbolic of both of those actions. Something culturally significant is taking place in that community that is not being reported-on.

As a very Latino looking gentleman of a certain age, my only 'no go' zone is Temple Square.

Just kidding, I know I'm welcome there.

Perhaps "no-go zone" is a bit simplistic for this discussion. I think "high-risk" works better.

Risk varies greatly, not only in terms of a neighborhood or district, but also in terms of an individual's personal sense, and practice, of safety. Since I know my city very well, there really isn't any place that intimidates me. If I were traveling elsewhere in the country, I might have to reconsider. Regarding Susan's cute joke, my concern on having a flat on I-80 out of SanFranSicko would be finding a safe place, traffic-wise, to pull over, not who might be loitering near by.

I patronize a great Jamaican take-out in a section pajama boys rarely tread. My political district is minority-majority, and my neighborhood was high-minority when I bought my house, and my children were probably the only Anglo-white kids in a four-block radius. It's more gentrified now, as m.ost of the families have moved on

Maybe someone in Sweden sold some gullible church leaders some forgeries and is blowing up the people who could rat him out.

There seems to be at least some ethnic component to this as evidenced by the quotation in which one of the insiders uses the word "inshallah." The bombings seem to be a bizarre practice that developed in a minority community and Sweden and have spread more broadly. As the following article notes, Germany has the same ethnic composition but there is nothing like this in that country.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/nov/04/sweden-bomb-attacks-reach-unprecedented-level-as-gangs-feud

It is also important to realize that this bombing trend corresponds with a decrease in murders in Sweden in recent years, good news to all but those who want "socialist" countries to fail. From the same article:

"Despite the gang attacks, Sweden’s murder rate has fallen since the 1990s and remains among the world’s lowest, with killings linked to domestic violence, hate crime and “spontaneous fights” all significantly down."
