Film Theory on the dark secret of "Cats".

It's a cult! He goes through the stages of cult indoctrination and how they match the Cats narrative.

"Did I just watch a 2-hour movie about suicidal cats?" These were my first thoughts upon exiting Cats, Tom Hooper's digital fur technology extravaganza based on the musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber. But, as I reflected on the journey of the Jellicle cats, I realized that the cats weren't necessarily suicidal, but brainwashed. The cats in Cats are essentially in a cat cult. And once you notice, it's impossible to forget.

Webber used one of his childhood books, Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, a book of poems by T.S. Eliot, to tell the stories of the different personalities of cats through theatrical music and dance. The poems are typical of the human tendency to attribute human personalities and emotions to animals.

To give the collection of poems some sort of "plot" Webber takes it one step further and also gives the cats in his play human religion - a twist on the very ancient and enduring human myth in many cultures around the world that cats have multiple lives. As part of a religious festival, one deserving cat will be reborn into a better life and ascend to the Heaviside Layer. It could be interpreted that the "plot" of Cats is all about human religious beliefs - "religion" for many humans, however, is synonymous with "cult".

Rather, if one looks beyond the overt religious overtones of the play, it can be interpreted that the "plot" of Cats is truly about accepting one another and caring for one another despite differences in appearance and personalities.

I can see it that way. I had that same thought just a few weeks ago. I love Cats. It would make a good movie to watch in a bar.

The only thing I know about 'Cats' is what my daughter told me: they took a world-renowned ballerina, Francesca Hayward, and instead of having her do the sensuous opening dance sequence of the musical that, you know, requires a dancer...they gave her a song.

Because Hollywood.

Said with a cat shit eating grin.

The first time I heard that expression, I immediately saw my old pug dogs face looking up at me just before I chased her away from a pile of cat shit she was eating in the yard. True story, true shit, true pug.

One of my all time favorite songs "memories" is in that show.
For some reason that song triggers huge emotion in me.
Perhaps it is the longing in the music coupled with the emotion of the lytics.

I would be embarrassed to admit I had seen this movie.

I've seen it and I liked it.

If Rusty were Old Deuteronomy he would have not picked an old glamorous cat to send to the moon.
