Mike Hughes, the self-made engineer who billed himself as the “world’s greatest daredevil,” was killed Saturday outside Barstow during a launch of a homemade rocket gone wrong, his publicist confirmed.

Gravity wins again.

Don't those Discovery shows have a "Don't try this at home" disclaimer?

"Before that launch, Hughes told the Associated Press that he believed Earth is flat — or, in his words, “shaped like a Frisbee” — and that he wanted to fly into space to make sure."

He is now a frisbee.

After watching him taking off on YouTube, I had only two questions in mind:

1. How much acceleration did he pick up before the engine cut off? Seems like a lot. Crazy. And most importantly:

2. How many dummy payload test launches have they conducted???

Apparently not many. If any.

RIP man.

How many dummy payload test launches have they conducted?

Today may have been the first.

All of his launches were dummy launches.

Another Darwin Award finalist.

We've laughed at him before, in 2017 and 2018.

Beat me to the one-liner about awarding a posthumous Darwin award...

Clearly the current leader in the clubhouse.

Incidentally, they now exclude from consideration all alcohol/drug-related deaths, and those involving falls from precipices while taking selfies. Just too many!

BTW, nice to see you "on-board," Cabbie. Long time, no hear!

And yes, I know Darwin Awards are posthumous (given in recognition of "improving the gene pool" via "self-exclusion").

I sought to use the redundancy to clarify the subject for those who may not have seen its usage in the past; Charles Darwin was such a titanic figure in human history that the "irony" the term invokes might not be clear to those who haven't encountered it before.

The man went against my religion, which is scientism.
When you go against my religion, we kill you. BANG BANG!

Note: A couple of people so far have told me that I am into scientism. I really have no idea what that is but I guess it was their way to defend their silly beliefs.

He needed a homebuilt rocket to reach 5,000 feet?! Why didn't he just go to the local airport and have a flight instructor take him up in a Cessna 172?

Options: ReplyQuote

.......or a commercial airline flight that would take him up to 30,000 feet.

Not sure if the guy was mentally ill, or just liked the attention from being a walking talking Roadrunner cartoon. Of course both could be true.

According to those who were close to him, it was the latter. Several of his associates have stated that he did not really believe the earth to be flat, but used the flat earth movement to increase the publicity for his stunts.

I agree, it is very sad. Someone made a documentary about him a few years ago as he prepped and made a previous launch. (Spoiler alert: he survived that attempt)

He was obviously dealing with some real mental health challenges, and people were pretty brutal to him.

Here's a complete article on his eventual plans. He wanted to get up to 62 miles high as his ultimate goal.

It's nice to have dreams and work towards them.

Also nice: a friend willing to stop you from doing something life-threatening and extremely stupid.
