PostMormon Association lecture series
The speaker for Sunday March 8th is Charley Harrell, author of This is My Doctrine: The Development of Mormon Theology (Kofford Books, 2011). This book reveals the human face of Mormon theology and shows how ancient Israel, New Testament Christianity, and Mormonism all adopted religious beliefs of their time and shaped them in idiosyncratic ways to achieve particular ends. It also shows how every major Mormon doctrine has gone through multiple iterations in an attempt to achieve consistency and palatability. Charley’s presentation will give specific examples highlighting the convoluted nature of doctrinal evolution. He will also describe his own faith journey, the challenge of publishing such a controversial book as a BYU professor, and the impact his deconstruction of Mormon theology has had on his personal worldview.
Charley is a retired professor of engineering and technology from BYU. He is also founder of ProModel Corporation, a leading provider of simulation software. He has been a bishop, high councilor, seminary and institute teacher, and has written and presented in numerous venues on the development of Mormon doctrine. He and his wife, Yvonne, split their time between Orem and Coral Canyon.
We will be meeting at the Red Lion Inn, 850 S Bluff, at 2:00 PM March 8, St. George Utah
